This rockfish measured 43", and weighed in at 41lbs. My nephew caught this striper on the Chesapeake Bay yesterday. He's the young fellow in the gray pull-over. My brother is on the left, and our Dad is in the background in the stocking cap.

Too bad the early season for striped bass is over for the year. This one went right back into the water!

We have been having a bit of trouble with the gill netters here in the marylands this year.

So, how'd you prepare it, and how'd it taste?

The OP said they threw it back in immediately.

Ay, ain't that the truth.

Lemme put it this way for you non MD folks. If February alone...12.5 tons... TONS of illegally netted rockfish in the the Maryland Chesapeake bay. It is so bad that the entire commercial season was suspended. 25 THOUSAND pounds of illegally caught and wasted fish!

We have had the same problem with gill netters off the CA coast too. The Coasties finally cracked down and a few went to jail. The problem still exists but it's not as bad as it used to be.

Pretty much. He's a little heavier than I am, and I still have a full scalp of hair, but he's 2-1/2 years younger than I am.

Don't get me wrong, I'm also a big, dumb, fat pipe welder ...

We have a short trophy season in early May, and the regular spring season that follows for striped bass. They'll still be around!

And, yes, they are very tasty! Best eating fish around here, IMHO, with the possible exception of walleye. You gotta know how to fillet them properly, as they have a pretty thick blood line in the meat that we cut out, especially in the larger fish. The fillets cook up quickly, and are as white, tender, and flaky as can be when properly prepared!

My father and I used to fish for stripers in San Francisco Bay. I loved catching them but, you know, I never really liked the way they tasted. I preferred Pacific Rockfish.

I used to fish for stripers in Suisun Bay, Sacramento River, and once or twice in San Pablo Bay. YUMMMMMMMMMY!!!!!

And, if the stripers weren't biting, or only the undersized ones came up, there were always those pesky channel cats that I'd hook frequently.. mmmmmmmm Southern Fried Catfish, Bay Area style :)
