Been hearing a woodpecker on 3.899 to 3.905, changes pitch and bandwidth from time to time.
Clues? Anyone?

I expect it to get worse, and more frequent on all bands...It's even detectable on the hamisland boards as well.
It's a people thing. People suck.

It was extremely strong up until I posted this thread. The signal has weakened some and covers a slightly smaller footprint now.

Likely OTH Radar. Used in Asia, and other places. Sounds different than the infamous woodpecker, but very obnoxious.

Sucks, doesn't it?

I need five of those 'Steelyard' (Duga-3) antenna arrays such as were used at Gomel, Belarus...along with the space to erect them in a pentagonal arrangement.

22dBd forward gain over 7-22MHz; beam steerable through 70 degrees H-plane and 60 degrees E-plane...hmmm...

The whole Duga project is fascinating. I would love to tour old Cold War sites in Russia. If I were dying of terminal cancer my last wish would be to tour Chernobyl.

On the other hand...the gamma-ray flux may in fact cure your cancer...

Heh, wouldn't that be something if it was discovered that standing in a certain spot in Chernobyl cured cancer. lol

I'm sure some contesters in the Ukraine have considered it. But who wants to glow in the dark for the rest of their lives?

Chernobyl is actually pretty safe. Most of the dangerous high level radiation has dissipated. I'd be more worried about car exhaust fumes from the local highway than I am about radioactivity.

Yes, I do occasionally wear a radium watch.

Hmmmmm ....... if it's safe to go to the Chernobyl area....I'm wondering why they still have the "exclusion" zones?

nevertheless this Youtube video done by a Russian tour company of the Duga-3 site is neat to watch!
