So, in honor of the Egypt thread...suppose the infrastructure takes a crap and you need/want minimal internet connectivity, how would you do it? Cell phone network is down/overloaded, typical satellite solutions are outside the reach of your budget. At a minimum you should be able to move email in and out and monitor weather.

I don't think I'm gonna be too worried about the web or email in a real emergency situation.

Neither even came into play for field work done during the blizzrd of '93 here. The EOCs will still have full web access.

I'm trying to convince the local EOC that they need satellite web access . We'll be players in the 8-state earthquake exercise mid-May , and most terrestrial networks will "fail". Hams have a chance to look real good then , or not . Regardless , the Hughes service needs to be there . For text messaging the ARC maintains a 1200-baud packet setup on the repeater site .

I'm involved in planning a multi-agency disaster exercise and I'm planning on taking out the cell network early.

Hey, you're gonna need that porn to wind down at the end of a hard day...

I was way too tired at the end of each day to be looking at porn.

You weren't delegating enough.

You weren't delegating enough.

The officers (EOC types) delegate and the grunts (EOC drafted suckers in the field) do the work. Then when it's time for praise and pics in the local papers afterwards!? Yeah there's all the EOC guys and none of the grunts.

It's just like the Army in many ways, with no Purple Hearts for the wounded.

Oh yeah, what's that noise I'm hearing? It's the hair raising on EOC guys of this board!

I spent 17 years in the field as a grunt, now I'm transitioning in to the EOC arena.

Can you wear 3 HTs on your belt at once? It's a required test for EOC entry.

I'm reluctant to wear one if I don't have to.
