Down in your neck of the woods I'd imagine there are many places where you can get a good taco. And I'd imagine there are also some places where you can get a good bowl of chili.

The problem is that you white folks think Taco Bell is Mexican food. :yuck: I dont even eat there when I'm drunk/hung over. Its also like saying that Olive Garden is the pinnicle representative of Italian cuisine.

Exactly correct, Ren, and it's funny that you should use those two restaurants because I often do the same in reverse to people who tell me that they don't like Italian food, then admit that the only place they've ever eaten it is the Olive Garden.

In fact, the Olive Garden and Taco Bell are very much alike in one way: the food they serve bears a slight resemblance to the category of food that they claim it's supposed to represent but misses offering the real thing by a wide margin. But there's less excuse for not knowing the difference between good Mexican food and the crap that Taco Bell peddles because even good Mex is relatively inexpensive. A good Italian meal, on the other hand, is going to set you back $20-30 per person minimum. It's also a lot harder to come by unless you live in NY/NJ or San Francisco.

What you call chili is and entirely different animal down my old neck of the woods. Its actually called Chile Colorado and not what you folks would come to expect for.."chili"

Not entirely true. You just have to really look for it. Its either going to be a hidden place, relatively inexpensive and "homey" or relatively pricey! There was one in San Antonio...uhh...La Scala if I am not mistaken. It was good...Really good but more of a special occasion place vice a once a week thing.

Chili as most Americans think of it is a Texas thing, not Mexican. I like Chile Colorado but I like Chile Verde (puerco con chiles verdes) even better. I make up a pretty mean batch of it, too, if I do say so myself.

Yeah, you can find good Italian food if you look hard enough. What I meant was it's not as readily available as good Mexican food. Around these parts, you can hardly walk down the block without bumping into a taco truck serving really good Mexican food (the ones that don't serve good food don't last long) but I have to drive five miles to the nearest decent Italian place and another ten miles to the next-closest joint after that.

Of all places sofar, the best comida Mexicana I have eaten is in Durham, NC Place called Los Comales. Every painter, carpenter, sheetrocker, and roofer eats there. If you cant read spanish, speak it a little bit, or know what is on the menu...well Taco Smell is just up the road. One of the few places that had all my favorites. Tripas, lengua, cabrito, Menudo, Caldo de Res, Caldo de camarones. and no bullshit real corn tortillas. OOH and real Mexican Coke and Fanta not that HFCS shit they sell up here. Gaaaah. First and last stop when I go to visit the in-laws and the only stop if I am passing thru Durham.

Hello.

So true!
Mexican is just so easy in San Antonio.
But a good Italian dish? this is San Antonio, MEXICAN!!!!
When I did go to San Francisco I would hit 2 Italian food joints that were not all that well rated by the locals, but far better than anything I have been able to find so far in San Antonio.
And, yes, good Italian food comes at a price.

Best Italian is homemade. Even I can cook good authentic Italian. Having Rigatoni with home made sugo finto smothered with Imported Pecorino Romano with Italian Sangiovese in about an hour.
My linguini aglio e olio is kickass too.

Easy to make and cheap too. I can get good Italian sausage here now.

got some Italian dry salami too that's going into the oil & vinegar salad.

Good, but Trattoria Tiramisu (http://www.tiramisutrattoria.com/) in La Mesa is even better.

Real Italian Salami & Sopressata is divine. Funky with a fermented sweetness. The meat is never cooked but dry cured over months.
