No one in SC knows about the man.

That probably says as much about the man and his works as it does about SC.

RIP Sargent Shriver, a man who made a huge difference in this world.

My uncle Bob (deceased) was a frequent Peace Corps volunteer, a Catholic Priest who took sabbaticals from the priesthood to do stints in Kenya and Brazil. When not there, he did some parish work and teaching at Catholic schools.

Was killed in a nasty flood that washed out a bridge outside of Sao Paulo, along with a load of kids from a live in school and orphanage. Nobody ever found them, just gone. He loved the Peace Corps, and I think he felt happiest and useful doing that kind of work.

Men of Shriver's social station were raised on the idea of service, of giving something back to the society from which the drew so much benefit. An interesting look at his ancestral home and his forebears may be found here (http://www.unionmills.org/). It's an idea that seems to have fallen in the cracks in recent decades.
