Yep.
Hear around all our bands pirates, specially in the EU.
Just under our bands they use mirrorred pirate bands "just like the big boy's"
Here you can find them just below 3.5 MHz, 6.9 MHz, 13.9 MHz, etc, 49 MHz and just above the 2 meter band, etc...

air force MARS maybe??? navy mars was in the 3.3 range.

AFF prefix is the one air force mars uses.

What you heard is Air Force MARS traffic.

If you want to hear pirates in that area of the spectrum, try 3475. They almost always use LSB rather than USB, which legitimate operations within the frequency range use per ICAO convention.

I was 45 minutes late to the party and was not able to home in on the traffic in question. There was a good bit of AM BC traffic on both side of the freq though.

LSB would make it seem like rogue hams operating in a manner consistent with convention under 10 Mhz. Or then again, maybe pirates just assume anyone operating legally in that area wouldn't be able to effectively tune a LSB signal with a rig specifically designed to operate there.

Nothing was as good as Radio Clandestine in the early 80's. RF Burns, where are you now?

Somewhere, he lives in a box of cassette tapes at the home of my parents.

I am not sure where they are, but both my parents have been told on numerous occasions *not* to throw away any cassette tapes. Give them to me. Slowly they're sending the flotsam of the lives of their children to the respective child's home.

That box also contains one special tape which is full of local repeater lore from late night winter QSOs. Mostly silent keys now, but some of it so brutally funny that the memories live on among the few who were there.

I remember hearing "Radio Outer Limits" in the late 80's and early 90's on AM ... just above the 40 meter band
