Don't forget, there is an eclipse tonight. To view it you'll have to be watching the moon between about 1:30 am - 3:30 pm. It reaches peak intensity around 2:41 pm at which point the moon should be emitting a ruddy glow. What is unique about this Lunar Eclipse is that is coincides with the winter solstice for the first time in about 500 years !!

I've been waiting on this one and completely expected it to be cloudy until this evening...crystal clear w00t!
Going to break my 'no strong coffee after 9pm' rule.
Cleaning the binoculars too.

oh yea, Johns times are eastern.

I've been looking forward to this for months and, of course, it's going to be cloudy and raining through Wednesday. Figures.

It's clear around here now. But rest assured, by 1:40 - 4:00 am it will be probably be cloudy.

She is cloaked in her misty gown tonight. We'll see if she disrobes in time for the show.

Well, in this area she is standing naked and open for the world to see. Let's hope she doesn't decide to get dressed between 1:30-4:30 am...

No eclipse viewing for me either. Pouring down rain here in Ontario, CA.

We've had over an inch here in the last 24 hours, which is a lot for this part of the world. And wait--it's gonna get even better! The heaviest rain is supposed to come tonight and tomorrow.

Got yer mud pontoons ready?

Laugh if you want but there's nothing like a good session of California mudslide surfing. The best part is that you can do it without leaving the comfort of your own living room.

Seriously, weather like this makes me happy I don't live in one of those hillside McMansions.

Set my alarm for 2:45am. Got up and walked out to a very mystical looking wispy cloud cover.
Sat on the deck and smoked one, diggin the scene. Very pleasant and I'm very happy to been there zoning on a once in a lifetime event. Totally in the moment.
Had some wild freakin' dreams in between 3:45 and 6:00am. Srsly.

We got a pretty good look at it here. The sky was clear to misty at times. The moon appeared a bright yello-orange at the peak intensity of the eclipse. The street and yard lighting made it a bit difficult to see at times. I watched it from the window as it was bitter cold outside with an animalistic northwest wind pounding hard.

After that smoky blood moon I have little doubt.

Maybe you are avoiding the good drugs that make these weather extremes tolerable.

Not to damper your fun, but you should be able to see another in 2014. Lunar eclipses are uncommon, but they're also not rare.

This one was on the Winter Solstice.
I've witnessed many Lunar eclipses and enjoy them.;)

Yeah but this one coincided with the winter solstice. First time that has happened in around 500 years. Won't happen again till the 2090's

Yeah, I got that. The last time was in 1638 (372 years, but who's counting?).

Considering that one concerns the earth's axial tilt and orbit around the sun while the other arises from a Sun-Earth-Moon alignment (i.e., unrelated astronomical phenomena), I don't really see the big deal. But knock yourself out.
