I remember seeing it on COPS where a guy stole a water heater from an empty house and the police followed the trail of water.......

Sorry about that, but the truth is that no matter what time of the year it is,
Stupid is as stupid does

Stupidity is what ends up getting most criminals locked up. In virtually every case of this type an arrest results because the criminal is either too greedy, or too stupid. In this case the guy is 55 years old and still running petty robberies ? Sounds like this guy has some problems. This guy had really better seek some kind of rehabilitative helf and fast because he got a break this time. next time he might end up dead.

I read a report that in this area railroad and/or transportation system related crime is up about 40% this year. Could it be the messed up economy creating more desperate people ?

Nah, jumping turnstiles was popular before the economy crashed. On the other hand, when it comes to Penn Station and Port Authority people are even more desperate to get out of New York only now they can't afford the fare.

Hello.

Jobs are around, just that most are now in China. ;)
Here in the USA, more are worried about Wikileaks, even though all that is there shows the stupidity of our nations leaders and is in no way a real threat to national security.
Bottom line is the bottom line, and outsourcing really is good for America, until the really top management get outsourced, think China is going to leave these clowns in charge?
If a war were to break out between the US and China, would you fight?
The only reason war were to break out would be if the top leaders disagreed, the 'Time for a change has come' type of thing.
There will always be the equipment operators and field mechanics, the bench techs and translators, the truck drivers.
In short, I will always have a job.

Jumping turnstiles was for amateurs. The real guys knew how to turn them backwards and slip through them without jumping. It was also an easy way to get arrested. NYC transit doesn't fine fare evaders, they arrest them. Get caught evading the fare and you get cuffed and arrested and get to see what the world looks like from inside a jail cell. Oh, and even if a fare evader makes it onto the train he is still not out of the woods. The cops will hold up the train and board it to make the arrest.

The main guys in NYC didn't jump turnstiles. They jammed turnstiles. They would jam something into the slot where the token is placed in such a way that the token doesn't go all the way down. Then they'd wait for some unsuspecting passenger to drop his token into the turnstile. Natural the coin doesn't go all the way down and the turnstile doesn't work. But it does go far enough down where it can't be easily reached or retrieved. Frustrated the passenger tells the token booth clerk what happened and the booth clerk unlatches the passage doors (the unlatch electrically) and lets the passenger go through to the waiting platform. Now, at this point home boy springs back into action. He runs up to the jammed turnstile, puts his mouth over the token slot and with one sudden hard inhalation sucks the token right up out of the slot and into his mouth. He then spits the stolen token from his mouth to his hand to his pocket. Then he repeats this process. He may work alone or with a partner. They may jam one turnstile or several at a time. Once they've stolen enough tokens they sell them at a discounted price. On a good day they'll quickly acquire enough money to buy a few vials of crack or enough bags of dope to stay happy.

Due to the new Metrocard turnstiles and increased security turnstile jamming has fallen out of fashion in NYC. But I'd seen the operation I described abouve on quite a number of occaisions back when turnstile jamming was profitable and in it's heyday.

"He runs up to the jammed turnstile, puts his mouth over the token slot and with one sudden hard inhalation sucks the token right up out of the slot and into his mouth."
AAAKKK!!! Unable to speak he thinks "this is it, I finally made it to America's Dumbest Criminals" and <plop> down he goes.

"On a good day they'll quickly acquire enough money to buy a few vials of crack or enough bags of dope to stay happy."
Not as quick but just as dead.

"Due to the new Metrocard turnstiles and increased security turnstile jamming has fallen out of fashion in NYC."
Now the "professionals" clone them, less work and far more profitable.

Funny how my silly sarcasm can turn deadly serious in the hands of a New Yorker, youse guys are tough cookies! (;->)
