We check each of them, as Jeff has a 'stop' in the registration process where either he or I approve them. The last fellow in (not using a callsign as his username) is a ham, but we'll let him sort that out.

It isn't an official policy, but the only ones we let in recently were all hams. We deny 10 for every user approved. The comment spammers are active ...

My 11 year old (A Star Wars and Ubuntu Fan) loved your Jedi-Tux Avatar. Consequently, he has made me find all of the different versions and later, I'll be forced to send them to his PC and set them up as his Desktop Background. I just thought you would like to know that you have contributed to his madness.

I was a mod on a local radio station message board before the DJ nuked it in favor of Face Book.
I went in everyday and blocked entire countrie's IP addys like China, Nigeria and Ukraine. Interestingly, they simply purchased new blocks of addys each week. They advertised everything from knock off shoes to gold and even links to free porn but in every case, if you clicked on the link the site would drop a bomb of some sort on your machine. I had to allow one IP from Israel because one fan was deployed in Iraq at the time and the only route from there was through Israel.
It was a daily job.

What about old members without call signs? I feel kind of left out here...

Anyway, guess I'll come back out of hiding after such a long absence. My name's Mike. Mostly I've just been doing SWL. Wrapping up college has put a damper on upgrading to my General. Hopefully end of the month or sometime shortly after the first of the year, I shall cease to be a mere Technician and be allowed to play on the HF bands.

I've got a Yaesu FT857D and an old Kenwood TS440/S AT along with some miscellaneous stuff and an old Lafayette COM-PHONE 23A that I picked up because it amused me and it was 5 bucks.

Yes, I do partake in the Citizen's Band, but more as the tool it was designed to be. It's really nice to be able to talk to a truck driver who's a few miles ahead of you on the interstate when traffic has ground to a halt and you want to figure out what's going on and how to quickly get around it. Plus what I hear on there never ceases to amuse me. But that's a topic for another day.

That about sums it up, back to work on figuring out where and how I'm going to put up antennas at the house.

I am not as "old" a member as Mike. I joined last year in the summer I think. I failed to follow simple written instructions. I was thinking my user name would be different than my call sign. I always make sure my call sign is in my sig line somewhere. I am glad Mike came out of the woodwork, and posted. He is an old timer.

Hey Mike, I've not seen you 'round here before, so I'll give my "Welcome"! I wouldn't slight "mere technician"... Lots to be had on VHF+

I still use CB as well. Works nicely when out on the road. I don't have enough room for a 20 meter whip, and 10 is usually dead (Nobody talking ever).

Jeez, Is my going bald and gray showing that bad?? I'm only 27! Crap, I do feel like an old timer making the following statement.... Back when I joined up using your call sign was optional.

VHF and UHF mostly consists of the local repeater scene, which is fairly dead. I occasionally hear some stuff on 10m, but it looks like most of the action is 20 and below.

Meh, apparently I'm just a reclusive old hermit. A whole 59 posts in 3 years.

And bonus fact, my beach has the possibility of becoming slightly irradiated. On the shores of Augustine Beach, you can sit there and look smack dab at Salem 1, 2, and the Hope Creek reactors on beautiful Artificial Island on the Delaware River.

And for trivia round two, it's known in the local aviation community as the "Nuclear Windsock"

welcome back mike and you have been here longer than i have...lol
i got my tech when you were 4....
i did not get my general until they dropped the code to 5 wpm and then i was grandfathered in.....
i also still have a couple cb's laying around and used.
as for hf you do have 10 meters to play with and the band has been opening once in a while.

Cool! So you'll be able to work on your tan even at night! You'll look as good as John Boenher before you know it.

Mike, I became interested in ham radio back when I was a teenager but I didn't get my technician license until August 2009. I got my general four months later and I'm a truck driver, so you know that if I can do it, anyone can. Go for it--HF is where the fun is!
