Sounds like a typical coastal storm coming from the south that affects Southeast NY, NJ MD. and coastal regions south.. Meets up with the cold air already in place and starts as sleet. Pulls in warm air from the ocean and it changes to rain for the majority of the storm. Cold air pushes back in behind the storm and the rain starts changing back to sleet and wet snow before ending soon after. I expect to see that pattern a dozen times or so over the next few months.

Your area gets the storms coming off the lakes. So you probably see a lot of snowstorms that come down as all snow.

That type of storm is rare down here. We generally get sleet storms down here and as a rule they almost always make a transition to rain at some point as temperatures rise from subfreezing and on up through the 40's 50's and sometimes even into the 60's !! in MIDWINTER!! Yes, its not uncommon for it to be bitter cold here , a storm rolls in overnight, you wake up and it;s rainy, windy and warm and feels like April or May and then the next day its bitter cold again.

Only until the lakes freeze over, specifically, Lake Erie for me (Which freezes around January, typically, however that has been pushing later and later every year, and unfreezing earlier and earlier) :)

BTW we have the Bronx river nearby which also never freezes. But in this case its because there is so much pollution in it that it can't freeze. The whole damned ocean will freeze solid to the core before the Bronx river will even start to freeze. And, if the Bronx river ever does freeze they could probably unfreeze it by setting the water on fire !:lol:

WOW!! Sounds like the kind of weather we were getting here in the 1980's Only probllem is that when winter returned it came in the form of severe thunderstorms, tornado's and high blustery winds. I remember one night it started off around 70 degrees. Around 2:00 am I woke to thunder, lightning, and extreme winds. I looked outside. It was a thunderstorm but instead of rain it was hail and snow.

Is that common for you area ... for it to warm up like that and then to cool down abruptly. It happens all the time down these parts. The coastal Nor'easters pull in warm humid air and temps will shoot up from 10's and 20's to 50's and 60's and then plummet back down to the 10's and 20's. I remmember one year we even had Thundershowers forecast for Christmas eve and one other year we had thunderstorms in January.

No. It's not (Well, until starting about 10 years back). We are usually pretty well regulated by Lake Erie and Ontario. For some reason, as of the past decade, we have been getting wilder swings in temps, crazy assed storms, and a shorter winter.

As far as the crazy storms, think Blizzard with Lightning. First time I witnessed it, I thought the end of the world was near. I couldn't get the image of the Genesis Planet out of my mind, where one minute it's the tropics, and the next, there's a blizzard, with lightning and earthquakes.

People up in the Adirondacks are saying the same thing. And I'm referring to old timers born to the region who have been there for many decades. Not only are the winters shorter and not as cold but the temperature swings are much more frequent. About a year or two ago they got a sudden thaw in January, temps shot up into the 50's. A lot of people up there said they'd never seen that happen before nor felt temps so warm in January in that region...which is at a moderately high elevation.

As far as the crazy storms, think Blizzard with Lightning. First time I witnessed it, I thought the end of the world was near. I couldn't get the image of the Genesis Planet out of my mind, where one minute it's the tropics, and the next, there's a blizzard, with lightning and earthquakes.

I've also witnessed lightning and thunder during snowstorms. I'd imagine it happens for reasons similar to what creates lightning and thunder in summer. In your case it sounds like it happened following a stretch of mild weather so, probably warm moist rising air ahead of a strong cold front produced conditions much like during summer months. However I've also seen it happen during snowstorms occurring in bitter cold weather so perhaps it has to do with milder air ushering in from the ocean and rising upward creating similar conditions... I guess any dense cloud with lots of particulates moving about can generate static charges. I have even heard of lightning emanating from dense volcanic ash clouds... now that must be the epitome of ominous.
