My friend Joe just phoned to let me know he passed the Tech test this morning.

Been doing a little Elmering over the summer and fall; apparently it paid off.

No callsign yet. He doesn't own a computer so he's got no way to look it up in the ULS...guess I'll have to do that for him in the next several days.

Ah, a new ham sprouting in Radio Gardens and in the dead of winter no less! Please pass along my congratulations.

Well Ron, how did you hear about the soup Nazi all the way out near Pissburg? Hmmm, a short drive from South Park anything can happen. (;->)

Hello.

It took the summer for him to get this far! (from a 30 year Novice. ;) )
Next thing you are going to tell me is that he wants a computer! (With Linux you can run a 486 in full GUI)
Perhaps he wants a radio? (Since public service is converting to 700-800-900 with Digital and Trunking both VHF and UHF commercial equipment is now very cheap)
For 160 he might consider an old Marine radio, for 10, FM, there are quite a few low-low split mobiles out.
J-Pole antenna is very easy to construct and for 160 a dipole longwire or loaded vertical with counterpoise.

He's a technician, Rudy, he can't operate on 160m. His only HF privileges are CW on portions of the 80, 40 and 15 meter bands as well as CW and a bit of phone on 10m.

It sounded like he was offering to set up a new station with some gear.

Congrats on the fresh ham, N8YX.

Oh, c'mon. That was one of the very few Seinfeld episodes worth watching.

There was even a Soupman franchise open for awhile downtown, but sadly, I never got over there before it closed.

By the way, I only live about 3 miles from South Park. No, the real one. Club had our last couple of Field Day's there. That's where W3WH's poor Omni VI met it's demise.

At least they don't wander out into the middle of the road,
not anymore anyway.

Hello.

Just as a Novice.
10 SSB, plus everything above.
I am simply pointing the options available, most are cheap, some are free.
An example of what I picked up this weekend.
The old analog trunking that was used for city services has been shut down so they tossed the old mobiles.
I took one look at this and took the remaining 5 home.
Why would I want an old Motorola Smartnet trunking radio?
I do not want the radio, just the power supply and speaker unit and the microphone from 2.
One has a 30 watt audio amplifier and tone remote.
The final 2 are the Handi Talkies, built-in audio and RF amplifier with a talkie inside.
It took all of 30 minutes to remove the STX talkie and mount and install rails to support the VX-7R in one.
A dual band mobile antenna and some mods to the RF amplifier and I now can do 15 watts anywhere the VX-7R can transmit.
Go Kit my arse, 24 hours of talkie power for free!? you bet!

Allegheny County doesn't have cows in South Park. The do have a herd of buffalo there. http://www.county.allegheny.pa.us/parks/spfac.aspx

IC-718 and TS-2000 in the shack; Astro and a 2M FM mobile in the car.

Whale of a station for a new licensee! Sound good -- but there's something missing. What about going for general?

Why an IC-718 and a TS-2000? Isn't that sort of redundant?

'718 is HF only - he's got it connected to a 10M vertical.

The '2000 will be his 80/40/15M HF rig, and when we get a few VHF antennas up in the air it'll serve as an FM simplex base. If a TV tower can be had we're going to put up some horizontally polarized VHF antennas for him.

Joe just got his first contact via the "trial by fire" method.

That is, the 28.337 gang got ahold of him. :snicker:

Too bad propagation isn't cooperating...he would have had fun working the 10M contest this weekend.
