He's probably laughing it up with a cast of others.

The theater just became a little sadder place to be.

That picture is him as Commander John J. Adams in Forbidden Planet (MGM 1956). When he discovered he was far better with comedy he stuck with it and excelled. We'll miss you Les and we won't call you Shirley.

Sad? Surely in one sense, Shirley. But we had Nielsen a relatively long time and the laughter he fostered will continue to roll through the years. What was really sad were the losses of other greats -- John Belushi and John Candy leap to mind -- who were taken from us all too soon.

The one thing this world most needs is more laughter, not less.

Rumack: Captain, how soon can you land?
Captain Oveur: I can't tell.
Rumack: You can tell me. I'm a doctor.
Captain Oveur: No. I mean I'm just not sure.
Rumack: Well, can't you take a guess?
Captain Oveur: Well, not for another two hours.
Rumack: You can't take a guess for another two hours?

In between his last dramatic movie role (The Poseidon Adventure) and his first comedic movie role (Airplane!) Leslie Nielsen had a guest star appearance on M*A*S*H. He played the straight man (anyone else remember the episode?) and did it quite well. So in retrospect, it's no wonder he did so well in Airplane!.

RIP, Dr. Rumack; er, Sgt. Frank Drebin, Lieutenant, Police Squad; Col. Buzz Brighton; Dracula, dead and loving it; The Swamp Fox; Commander John Adams; and host of other roles we know you by... and in none of them shall we ever call you Shirley.
