SSTV with Gretchen?
Ehhh...go for broke. Send 'er and I'll bet you'll cause half a dozen coronaries on frequency.

Be nice if we could somehow get in touch with the lady and have her do an autographed "Island Special" greeting card.

As far as radio goes: I have to clear-coat my car's fender this afternoon but otherwise have all weekend to play on-the-air.

I have to get the calzones going here. Mike is starting to fade here a bit, anyway so I guess the condx are changing. I'll check back later to see if the Island Net changes bands. Sorry I couldn't hear you Carl. Good talking with you Mike.

Or 01:00 UCT. Yeah, that works for me too. The grey line is just about on top of me now so 40m should be opening soon. My rig is already tuned up for 7200, all mighty 100 watts of it.

KG4CGC

Daylight saving

UTC does not change with a change of seasons, but local time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_time) or civil time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_time) may change if a time zone jurisdiction observes daylight saving time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time) or summer time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_time). For example, UTC is 5 hours ahead of local time on the east coast of the United States during winter, but 4 hours ahead during summer.

I can't get my antenna to tune up in the phone portion of 75m. Oddly enough, it will tune okay in the CW/digital portion. I suppose I should look at that as a incentive to either get my code skills up to snuff or build a better antenna.

KG4CGC
11-12-2010, 09:10 PM
If it's just wire, save yourself a lot of grief and set up a flagpole style with two lines to carry two sets of wires up. Wasn't having any luck with the weight of 250' of 8ga. trying to resist my advances against gravity.
Haven't tried to talk to anyone on 160 but it tunes up nice. Half the dipole is only 30' up and the other half is rises to 70' and flattens out for the last 30' there.

KG4CGC
11-12-2010, 09:58 PM
Anyone game?

W4RLR
11-12-2010, 10:22 PM
I'm game but late for the party as usual. Maybe we can set up some kind of Island net for a particular band or frequency, publicize it well in advance, and then see what kind of turnout we get. How about Fridays evenings stateside / Saturday morning UTC @ 0100. That way those of us stateside can join in and Cor doesn't have to stay up late. :-)

I'm listening to a booming station out of Italy right now on 7182. Quite a pileup going on now.

KG4CGC
11-12-2010, 10:41 PM
Yep. Italy is booming in and stateside sounds like QRP.

And I just logged him in with my little MFJ vertical and 90 watts. Roberto is a very nice operator. But the conditions are great, he acknowledged me on my second call, 57 signal report. It is true that you don't need much to work DX if the conditions are right. Most of the stations I've worked this month have been DX.

But I would like a tri-bander on top of a tower that at present is in pieces on the ground in my back yard. But i digress...

I'm lucky I have the inverted L up.

After we got done putting the extra radials in, my neighbor beckoned me over (it's his tree I use as the skyhook... with his blessing). He has a tree service coming in next week to remove a large hanging branch. Not the same one as last time (they just cut the wire, after promising not to), and he's told this outfit to leave the wire be. I'm not holding my breath.

Comment on Message Board (http://solarcycle24com.proboards106.com/) Aurora Watch - An aurora watch is in effect for within 72 hours and the cause is a CME associated with a disappearing solar filament. Multiple faint CME's are visible within the past 48 hours. Minor storming may be possible should one of these Coronal Mass Ejections sweep past earth.
Solar Update - Sunspot 1124 which is located in the northern hemisphere, continues to show some growth. This region has been quiet however. There has been once C-Class flare within the past 24 hours and this took place around Sunspot 1123.
There will continue to be an ongoing chance for C-Class flare activity.

What has The Island of Misfit Hams done to the fabric of the space-time continuum such that the radio gopods never smile on our attempts to communicate through the aether? Or maybe it's that some of us have special priviliges and can actually hear each other? This thread was fun to read through -- sounds just like every attempt I made this fall. I'd suggest taking things regional..yea, and then, each regional net would have a delegate to check into the national net and then back to the regionals. Well, maybe a local or district level to add another level AND more delegates!!!!! So those who want to feel "special" can be a "delegate" and be allowed to check into the regional or - gasp! - national net!

Guess that's been done before. Drat. Hows about a big multi-party cell phone conversation?

As long as we keep trying, we can get a feel for how conditions are now and the changes that may occur over the next few months.
AND, we will have each location, each of our QTH's, as a standard for a particular location, power level, and antenna type.

But there is a distance thing, likely a skip zone. No vertical on 75. :dunno:

I think my "skip zone" is at about 1200-1400 miles on 75. It's better shorter, and longer.

Yes. In addition, an IC-2KL and an R-71A receiver will be used with the other pieces.

It's the up-to-date equivalent of the TR-7/R-7/RV-75/L-75/MN-2700 line which is currently occupying that spot in my operating desk. I wouldn't mind picking up some THL amps and autotuners for my TS940S/R5000 SO2R position but you cannot run those amps on 110v at full output...and I'm not going to rewire this house. We'll eventually move to a place with some land and space for a real radio room, at which time I'll get the rest of the gear I need to make a go of contesting.

I heard some 17m activity earlier but they were all on USB. Isn't the default operating position for 17 LSB?

Nope.

You need to post some shack pics sometime, Fred. Been developing a mental image, but betting I might be wrong.

Here's the leftmost side:

3599

Contained therein are a bunch of MS-7 speakers, an MN2700 matchbox, CS-7 coax switch, R-7/TR-7 combo, RV-75 VFO, CW-75 keyer, SP-75 speech processor, Cubic 1500ZA amp, 2x FT-726R (HF/2/432, 6/2/440), a TM-221 220MHz FM mobile and a RadShack 19-1210 MURS mobile.

This is 'DSG's "multiplier" spot. I bought the auto-tune stuff for her so she wouldn't blow my Drake amps up. :snicker:

The middle position:

3600

Here we have a TS-660 (my first eBay purchase; gotten for a song), a PRO-2042 scanner, MFJ-1026 noise canceller and a PRO-2096 APCO-capable scanner. Next is an AT-200 tuner, SM-220 scope (both of which are connected to the Kenwoods underneath them). An Icom R-7000 and an R-71A (far right) round out the middle row. Last is a TS-940S/R-5000/DSP-599zx combo, plus a few SP-820 speakers.

Left side of this table mirrors the right: '940S, R5K and supporting peripherals on each. It's the SO2R setup. The rightmost position will become my digi-modes station when I finish connecting and configuring the PC which is next to it.

The astute viewer will notice that the QSL card parked in front of the '940 is none other than AE1PT's.

The rule of thumb is LSB below 9MHz, USB above 9MHz. There's no regulation saying you must do it that way but it's the convention.

I can't remember the exact details but it has to do with the old WWII surplus radio gear that hams who were experimenting with SSB back in the 50s were using. Something to do with the conversion from AM to SSB.

Ten Tec, when they made the Corsair, says otherwise. It defaults to lsb on 17 and I have to select SB-R which is sideband reverse.

It's broke. Here's the proper adjustment tool:

It has to do with the relationship between the ubiquitous 9MHz IF and 5MHz VFO frequencies of the day, and high-side/low-side mixing in certain commercial HF SSB rigs:

One combination would result in 75M (4MHz) LSB and the other would result in 20M (14MHz) USB. Discrete filters co$t and it was cheaper for the designers to use just one...

Here's how I remembered it:

When SSB first came to ham radio, there was a very popular home brew exciter circuit that many hams built which involved generating a 9Mhz SSB signal that was then mixed with the output of one of the war surplus command sets (I don't recall the type number) which was used as the VFO, operating in the region of 5 Mhz. By either selecting the sum or the difference between 9Mhz and the VFO frequency, outputs on 75 or 20 meters were obtained. This very popular rig produced a lower sideband signal on 75 and upper sideband on 20.
