Here's how I remembered it:
The ARC- series of Command Set.

Mine got turned into a random-wire tuner.

I STILL have the RF burn scar from that sonovabitch which I got upon contacting its antenna-lead binding post.

It has to do with the relationship between the ubiquitous 9MHz IF and 5MHz VFO frequencies of the day, and high-side/low-side mixing in certain commercial HF SSB rigs:

One combination would result in 75M (4MHz) LSB and the other would result in 20M (14MHz) USB. Discrete filters co$t and it was cheaper for the designers to use just one...

Aw, you answered him before I saw all this... Bummer.

Well, for the sake of those who don't see it, here's a simple mixing scheme from the late 50's & 60's:
9 MHz IF + 5-5.5 MHz VFO = 14-14.5 MHz
9 MHz IF - 5-5.5 MHz VFO = 4-3.5 MHz

That gives you 2 of your 5 HF bands (remember, back in the day, most rigs did not come with 160, and we didn't get the WARC bands until decades later). The other three are just additional crystals for mixing -- but you only need 3, not 5.

Now... if you're running USB on the 9 MHz IF by default, adding the IF + VFO in the mixer maintains USB. But if you substract the IF - VFO in the mixer, the sideband inverts, and thus, LSB. Which means, if you're trying to keep costs down, you only need to set up one SSB filter for USB, not two.

This also can tell you why some rigs appear to "reverse" the way the VFO runs.

Decided to try and get my station set back up last night after a full year of very little radio.

Got everything working and checked it out on 40m last night (conditions seemed terrible).
Still have to check out where the coax to one of the dipoles seems to be pinched between some decking out back, and may throw up a wire cut for the lower end of 75m.

"Got everything working and checked it out on 40m last night (conditions seemed terrible)."

They do to me, too, a lot of the time when I listen on 40, especially at night. The pisser is that when I listened to the phone SS weekend on 40, I heard stations from all parts of the country...east, west, north, south. CA, NV, TX, KS, CO...and so on. The band was in great shape. Now, there are some who will say (tongue in cheek)..."Well sure, the band was in good shape. The ARRL made sure of it with their connections."

Except for nasty QRN type noise, it would seem that "horrible conditions" just HAS to include "nobody's on."

It would seem that the most effective way to try a "Whole Island QSO" (name it what you want) would be to have a critical mass of stations from all parts of the country to get things going, especially if they were stations with power and decent antennas, and who are willing to wait it out when nobody else is on or the band is "really" in crappy shape.

Or maybe that, too, has been tried.

???

12-06-2010, 03:27 PM
Well, we have not tried that hard. I've had contacts with Islanders on on 75, 40, 30, 20, and 10.

Only three or four held up well enough for a ragchew. A lot run barefoot, and many run compromise antennas.

From the Mississippi west to the Pacific seems easier for me...

KG4CGC
12-06-2010, 05:36 PM
I have "reasonable antennas" and am over iron rich soil. The dedicated 160m antenna makes a huge difference not only there but on the upper half of the AMBCB. My 80m ant is a conundrum that I can not explain but it also peaks on the lower half of the AMBCB plus LW. The dedicated 20/40 does what it is supposed to do and of course, nothing beats an A99 on 10. Except for a 4 element yagi LOL!

Any band 'cept 60 or 30 here. No 60 and no wire for 30. I need to get my digital dongle in order before I get a wire up for 30. I've been looking at the propagation charts for the band and they look like they've been pretty consistent during the Winter nights.
40 has been changing like the wind and on 80, the changes occur slower when they do occur.
So, 80/40/20 ... 160?

Wow Tom, what were you smoking last night. (LOL) The Nathans is mated with a Bruster's Ice Cream. The DD stands alone and the Capri's Express stands alone. The change you may noted is that the Carolina Creme, after poor poor business for a long time (who wants an apple fritter that has been re-fried again?) has turned into a Papa John's Pizza.

Capri's Italian is a long time staple here in the South. I'm sure the menu is fantastic. Haven't been there but I've been to Carrabba's.

WV6Z
02-27-2011, 08:29 PM
My lack of accuracy is based upon the fact that a) I was the driver and b) the speed limit on the 123 bypass seems to have been raised to warp factor 3 now.

Carolina Creme was good back when we didn't worry about eating such....... it's not odd that a donut shop replaced a defunkt donut shop in the same hood really as Dunkin pushes their coffee and pit themselves against the Starbucks folk rather than Krispy Kreme types of places now, or so it would seem to me anyway.

Yeah, Capri's is consistent. The bill of fare was not only yummy, but pretty much as I remember it when we were neighbors rather than just upstaters. We did the lasagna for two, which of course came with the exact same salad that they used to have back in the day (although the blue cheese dressing seemed to be about 1000% better than it used to be), and of course, there was an endless supply of little loaves of bread, just like in the past. The atmosphere has changed for the better as has the decor and all of the management and waitstaff are all still familiar faces....... very nice to see indeed. We were well satisfied and pleased and although a lot more expensive than back in the day, the lasagna for two at $24.95 (I think that's the right price) was well worth the investment. We managed to escape there for under $40, so, really, that wasn't a bad hit for a tasty blast from the past at modern day prices. Glad we went as my first choice was Copper River for stuffed flounder.

Carrabba's is a bit newer of a local staple, but also quite a yummy place indeed....... haven't been there in a couple of years now either...... thanks for the idea for next Friday or Saturday's dinner matey! ;)

Probably the remnants of the storm that passed through here a few days ago. It wasn't nearly as severe as predicted but it did drop rain down here in the foothills and snow in the mountains.

Storms hit my brother's house as well as a few others in the area the next county over to the east. Knocked out some windows and siding and exploded bits of his fence as well as throwing whole sections up to 2 streets over.

Band conditions all across the spectrum were hoppin today everywhere I tuned. There was even one of them thar constipater fellers on 17m. Well actually not one as he was racking up the numbers. Didn't hear any contesters on 12m though, but there was plenty of activity though. Conditions were hot into the Pacific here..... BIG time...... which I thought was pretty odd for 3pm-ish my time.

I would expect to not hear contest activity on 12...WARC band.

And our cupie doll winner is....... TAH DAHHHH!!!!! No Tom, I wasn't looking for contesters on 12m, just listening for calls and contemplating propagation. OTOH, I wasn't expecting to hear the dumb ass on 17m who was actually racking up the contacts from stateside diptardz who were eager to play the numbers game on a WARC band.
