What are you complaining?

We're used to pay top prices here ( Tax) 1 liter diesel is € 1.14 gas is € 1.42 x 3.785 = $ 6.08 for a US Gallon diesel and $ 7.53 for a Gallon gas....
Using the exchange rate of 1 € = 1.40 US €

Add road tax, provincial tax and we still drive.

Last job i had ( 3 years ) was a one way trip of 131 Km's or 262 a day 6 days a week.
Or 164 miles a day.
We are expected to drive up to 100 miles one way to work, above that we can book a hotel.
You were saying?

Does your Granny live 1100 miles away then?

We have the occasional SUV here, even thhe odd Hummer 1/2 but most drive the beamers/volvo's/vw etc economic cars and lots on diesel.
I drive a van, 2.5 TD wife a small car Hyundai type with 40 miles to the gallon.
My van 25 miles a gallon.
Both will hit 100 miles+ if needed, but we never do.

My van will run just as fine on sunflower oil, peanut oil, or any other thin organic oil, done it for 10.000 miles and more.
Sunflower oil in bulk is 49 eurocents a liter.
Diesel now 1.12 Eurocents.
Just having fun looking at people's faces in France when you come out of the supermarket and start to empty the 5 liter cans of sunflower oil in my tank.
Priceless

That's cool, Cor. I'd really like a small diesel truck myself but they're hard to come by here in the US. However, several years ago I signed up to be a test driver for Mahindra, an Indian car company that is going to be marketing a diesel powered small pickup. I just got a letter from them yesterday informing me that they expect to start selling here next spring and that I'm still on their list. Supposedly, I get free use of one for a month. The thing is about the same size as my Ford Ranger but it has like a 1,225 Kg (about 3,000 lb) payload.

Here's the spec sheet if anyone is interested:

http://mahindrana.com/pdf/specsheet.pdf

PA5COR

Spec's sure look good, 30 miles a galon is better as my van that can handle 1300 kilo's or 2880 pounds.
Depending on the price it might become a runner, if it is cheap and has all the goodies with good economic milage, it is a runner.
My van just has 105 HP, but there's a 175 HP out doing 130 miles per hour max speed as well, and 400 lbs torque.
The chipped version does 225 HP.....4 wheel drive etc. but is quite expensive ...
I always drive empty, or lightly loaded on our hollidays.

Most maintenance i do myself in the garage at a friend who has a full service shop.
Beats lying on the ground having the van up on the bridge...
Newer engines, certainly common rail should never try running on anything else as diesel....
My older type engine and good seals with Bosch EV/PE pump does fine with it, even better emissions as with diesel and a tad more power.
( and cheaper too) ;)
Will be interesting how the Mahindra fares in the sales.

Problem is, Americans see cars and cheap gas as a birthright. Been that way forever. It's implanted in our very identity at this point.

Seriously... I see "kids" buying high-end gas gulpers all the time these days. Got a kid at work who "owns" a big late-model Dodge 4x4 AND a brand new Camero. Guessing he's 24-25. Just finished his degree and has potential, but this is the cart he's putting ahead of his horse. Why? Because that's exactly how Dad was. Used to work with a young lady there who had bought a big Dodge diesel 4x4 pickup truck. I think she was 22 and had a $20K plus mortgage on a TRUCK! Block cracked on the truck, she was planning her own wedding, and thinking of buying a house, all at the same time. Money went to the truck, $5,000 repair. That was two years ago. She's now married and has the house too. Guaranteed, they've already spent their retirement and haven't hit 30 yet. BTW, quite a few of these "kids" are already medicated on antidepressants and the like.

We're insane.

Never bought a new car even if i had the money.
Just young ( 1 or 2 year old) cars the van i bought 1 year old, ( 2000) still drive it, in very good shape, and will last another 10 years easy.
All paid for without loans and that crap when we bought them.

It is a transport medium not a ego booster....

RR. What I like to do is find a nice, clean one that's just come in off a lease. That way, the worst of the depreciation has already happened and I get a decent used car.

Absolutely. If you're not a great "wrench" the sweet spot is at about three years old. Depends a lot on how much you drive, though. The car "corral" here is a '99 Blazer and an '07 Altima, both used, both off-lease. I'll downgrade more next time. Known a few guys who never spend more than a grand or two on a car, but they have more garage talent than moi.

I know what you mean. I can do some serious wrenching if I have to but I don't really enjoy it anymore and I don't have a good place to work anyhow. I mean, I have performed engine overhauls in the driveway but it's a...less-than-optimal place to do it, even here in southern CA.

Hello.

I am a deluxe cheap bastage when it comes to vehicles.
My very first car was a caddy with a blown engine.
I got a used pickup that was run in the rear with a loader and diesel engine and 4 on the floor.
Ever seen a caddy with a standard and diesel engine?
I am so cheap that I used a pair of horseshoes and welded them together for a pedal X 3.
Anything that needed engine vacuum, like cruise, did not work.
But I was oh so happy with it. ;)

I just filled the truck up. $3.10 a gallon for diesel. Almost $80 to fill the tank.

It's not an issue if you put that size vehicle to earning it's keep. Around here they are status symbols and rarely serve any other purpose.

Hello.

The pickup was a 2 wheel drive job but trust me, if it was 4 wheel drive as crazy as I am I would have had a 4 wheel drive caddy! ;)
That car had a crap radio that I replaced with an AM/FM STEREO! radio and that one hand CB unit!
I also studied how the factory 8 track worked, a relay that would disconnect the radio when the 8 track tape was inserted but decided I wanted to be able to record and so later went with an under dash FM stereo and cassette player/recorder.
Orange carpet, thick nearly shag orange carpet with rubber mats over it topped that.
Remember the chrome speaker grills? there was the speaker in the canter of the dash, doors and the rear window shelf.
I must have had all of 10 watts per channel and if you cranked it up it sounded like crap but it was loud and somehow cool.
I wired a relay into the cassette player that could take audio from the mic and route it to an under hood PA speaker.
For a 2 way radio I had a Motorola business dispatcher, old even than, but I really did not care, it worked. ;)
Remember that this was my very first car and was young, the fact that it did have a diesel engine kept me out of trouble as just about anything could pull away from me. ;)
To round things out I had this chrome horse out front and chrome outlines of a horse on each side.
