We have recently lost a great Mathematician. Benoit Mandelbrot has left us. Best known for his research in fractals and his insights into how fractals can be used to describe much of the world around us. he will be missed but his work will live and be carried onward.

Hello.

Project ARC, the ultimate spy device of the 20th century, is based on the theory of the Mandelbrot set.

He is one of the very few who could fully understand it.
A great man who has enriched society.

This is a man for which there should be a national holiday. Sadly the greatness and intricacy and importance of his work is lost to most people.

Hello.

Totally agree.
Very few really understand the greatness of some and perhaps never will.
I have an IQ of 136 or so and as such can only begin to comprehend.
I also have my troubles and belong within a close knit community, that means I have to put up with the dummies. ;)

Hello.

In the US we have subcultures of very close knit communities.
A classic example is the Amish.
Another example would be an outlaw motorcycle club.
2 extremes of the same theme.
But look around you and open your eyes and you will see examples all around you.
A bunch of Mexicans who live and work together.
Construction workers who are now usually Mexicans ;)
Look and you will find what you a looking for.
Some say that Amateur Radio was a bit more exclusive in the past but I would not know, I grew up afraid of the white kids.
Since I felt as an outcast by the Anglos I developed very strong friendships with groups of people.
Amateur Radio was one means of maintaining contact, a means to an end.
Don't believe me look at the type of equipment I run, HF radios with a 2 carrier CW configuration, AM and FM at the same time, DSBRC with the 2 sidebands running independent information.
It is not cryptography but it is real close.
When I want true crypto I use a very cheap scheme.
Look at the modern car alarms and you will find that there is a purpose build RF chip designed around a pseudo random code generator, something very cheap yet very effective.
A mass produced IC chip that is a complete solution that can run pretty much on any frequency you want and will fit in nearly all radios.
Run at whatever power level the host radio runs and you have an authentication scheme.
And it is both cheap and simple.
Now ask yourself this one question, why?
