View Full Version : Would you send your QSL card in reply to this?

All other things being equal, is this card "nice enough" to get a reply to? If not, what would you change? What looks good? What looks horrid?

I like it. Nice touch with the panoramic view. My town isn't very photogenic. The highest building in town is only three stories tall.

As long as you don't put YOUR picture on it, I feel most people would likely return it to you. Think the area for the QSO details is a bit small, though. Why not move your name slug to the top left, and then expand the QSO block to the width of the margins? Make it easier for you and easier for an OF like me to read.

I kid i kid! A logo on the left center. Bingo! That's it.

A bit more white space than I would like. Otherwise, nice.

Basic design is very nice. A little too much white space in the center-left area, it cries out for a logo or another picture.

Or a plam tree with the letters IOMH next to it.

The photo is very nice. I agree with WN that the blank white area is a little too much. Other than that, ship it.

The white space is unbalanced and perhaps a little excessive.

I've replied to much, much worse.

I kid i kid! A logo on the left center. Bingo! That's it.Why on earth did you put human tits on such a beautiful dog as a Keeshond? (I have two keeshonden, and my family has been lucky enough to have one since I was in my teens)

Okay, K9TIT...I get it. A line drawing of Romulus and Remus would have been better.

Center the callsign and print it.

Center the callsign and print it.

I dunno; I think asymmetry is okay. I'd say it's almost there--make the call sign bolder and you got it.

Something similar to what Bob said. If I were to add some constructive critty-Q, the placement of the lettering needs some balance.
Perhaps even go back to the small fill in blocks and make a mirror image of the pic, resembling the reflection of a lake. Flip appropriately and add a bit of north south blur, just a tad.
I'd do it right now but I'm about to go out. I'll put something together later this evening.

Corey, I came up with this:

http://i815.photobucket.com/albums/zz79/gyrogeerloose/qsl.jpg

Just an idea. You will probably want to change the font, I chose one I happened to have on my computer that was bold enough for what I was thinking.
Probably should have centered the "Erie County, New York" too since that's what you did with your address.

I'm inclined to drop the second Newington diamond as well.

Balance is good, but manufactured symmetry tends to drive me insane.

Me too, and I'd add it to mine if it didn't look like a advertisement for IOMH already;

I still think the QSO details cartouche may be a bit small if the card is, in fact, 3x5.

I think it looks great, Corey. By the way, you could send me a handwritten note on a postit sheet and i would send you back a card...a QSL is a QSL no matter what.

But to answer your question, i think the re-worked card looks better.

Looks like a winner to me. I'd print it. :agree:

the only thing i'd change (now that everyone has changed everything else) is to put the arrl logo on the right (between the name/address and the callsign).

i keep thinking i'd want to use some sf-specific photo for a card but i can't decide which to use. of course, i'd have to get on the air to make any of this have a point :)

If i had my druthers, an ideal card...for me at least...would be the call, in a classy looking font, being prevalent somewhere appropriate to go along with the stunning landscape shot that would best describe the clime/culture of the location i am transmitting from. At the bottom, in the same font but smaller, would be certain info you want to convey like zone, city, country, grid, etc. All the qso info would be on the back, but the front would be frameable. I like to wish for that, but my cards are plain B&W, a little off center because of the cheap print at Office Depot...and i threw a yin yang symbol on there to gussy it up.

Those picture cards would be the special cards for really special qso's or website use, print less of them since they are more expensive. But for DXing, i would stick with what you have there, its better for qsl managers to work with, less mistakes. The call and qso info on the same side are always the best bet. And since we hams arent usually made of money, it just makes more sense to go with a simple card...trust me, the DX doesnt care how much the card costs, as long as the info matches. Just getting a card is the important thing,i think you're good to go with what you have there.

Just an FYI: You can go to a self-service photo kiosk and print full color (Glossy or matte) for about $0.28 each. It's what I'm doing :)

Standard QSL card size is 3-1/2" x 5-1/2". I think I'd stick with that. 3x5 is too small and 4x6 is too big.

oops! Been sending out 4x6 (Photo sizes)... Oh well.

The problem is storage... 4x6's won't fit in some wall hangers and if you rubber-band a bunch of cards together, the 4x6's get damaged.
