Have another operating system up and running in VMware .. Open Solaris
Installed very cleanly, runs, Firefox pre-installed.

The ISO download is about 667MB (Live Version)

Ubuntu, PC-BSD, and Solaris has the type of interfaces I am looking for.

What OS should I install next? Seal?

I would need an OS/2 disk or ISO file, I'd give it a try.

Just installed VMware for Solaris, installer friendly and works great. I do find Solaris a little sluggish, but I wouldn't hesitate to make a partition dedicated for Solaris and multi boot it.
To do what I am doing, you need a USB hard drive to keep baseline libraries... better yet, External SATA....

Solaris would be a big sluggish on a VM, because it doesn't play nicely with non-Sun VM's (a la IBM's LPARs). If you really need performance from a virtualized instance of Solaris, it's better to be run it on Big Iron.

Also, for OpenSolaris, I think there is an alternative kernel for virtual instances...

the only people who care about Open Solaris are people who grew tired of paying premium prices for sun's intel-based hardware.

back in the day i usedta run solaris 2.4 x86. i was one of the *two* people in all of oracle who used it for anything. hopefully it's gotten much better by now.

I actually like this Open Solaris.
Program download and setup was painless..
Compact and reconfigurable menu system..
Loading Open Office was a breeze. And no ribbons!

OpenVMS !!

OpenVMS is not available for x86 CPUs, so it cannot be installed in VMware VM

However, I think Qemu can run it :)
