Am presently downloading a 750ml bottle as a test. Not Zaya, but not bad.

:yum:

Anyone else a rummy?

I haven't had that particular version but Appleton is fine stuff. Meyer's was good a long time ago but they have since changed the way they make it.

I usually keep a bottle of Pere Magiloire Calvados around, Bill, but I only cook with the stuff.

You should give it a try, Bill. Most Americans think Ron Rico or Barcardi is what rum should taste like. Those are the same people who believe that Budweiser is beer.

Sip a good rum, neat, in a snifter or a cheese glass.

Yum. :yum:

Ron Rico is what they sell at the store by the cabin. I ain't picky, I guess.

Around here, the Captain seems to get the nod. Three fingers, four ice cubes and a can of diet CHERRY Coke.

Yes, I am going to hell. And I plan to arrive with two dollars in my pocket. ;)

Death would easily be the better alternative.

The Appleton Estate V/X is not intended for mixing with anything, not even water. Even an ice cube seems a profanity.

I had a snifter this evening, and I was impressed with its complex nature. It was all I could manage not to fill the snifter again.

Cherry Coke? :wtf:

DIET!

BTW: I've tasted Myers's http://images.send.com/129510_big.gif It's dark, and has some flavor, but I just didn't take to it.
What did you pay for the AEVX?

Can't drink Sailor Jerry's straight. It's like trying to drink vanilla extract.

I like Sailor Jerry's. Not straight, but it is a great mixer.

Never tried a rum that would be good neat. All the ones I can afford are destined to be mixed with cola and a twist of lime.

I always liked Mt. Gay but, since I usually used rum for mixed drinks, it wasn't worth paying the extra for the good stuff. I used to drink a lot of Mojitos back before they became trendy.

Cruzan is a nice shootin' whiskey, I mean rum.

What did you pay for the AEVX?

AE V/X was $20 minus a penny for 750ml at my usual spirits emporium. I have not comparison-shopped the item.

This from "Liquor Snob:"

Appleton Estate V/X Jamaica Rum
80 proof blended golden rum
Typical Price: Less than $20 for 750ml - Buy it at Internet Wines & Spirits (http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?randalls+FvWVrd+mb3504664.html)
http://www.liquorsnob.com/archives/pictures/appleton-vx-blended-rum-thumb.jpg (http://www.liquorsnob.com/archives/pictures/appleton-vx-blended-rum.php)Initial Thoughts: We like rum. In fact, there was a time when we would drink it quite often, mixed with ginger ale or orange juice. That was back before the Screech Rum debacle (http://www.liquorsnob.com/archives/2005/10/newfoundland_screech_rum_review.php) of '05, however, and it's taken us a few weeks to get our rum legs back under us. In Appleton Estate V/X, we've found a drink that can soothe the hurts and make things right.
Appleton Estate V/X consists of various types of rums aged between five and ten years, which are blended together in oak vats and allowed to age for a few months. The result is a spirit somewhere between white and dark rum, which smells like molasses and brown sugar, with even a hint of maple. When you taste it, it's not too sweet, however, and the sweetness is balanced out by citrusy, nutty flavors. The rum has a creamy, mellow finish that is dry on the tongue and resilient enough to last until your next sip without being overwhelming.
Finishing Thoughts: Appleton Estate V/X is unique and tasty rum, and a good way to dip a toe into the aged rum category without breaking the bank. It would make a great base for your typical tropical drinks without being too strong or too sweet, and we liked it on the rocks as well. One of our reviewers described it as tasting good without being "too rummy," and that just about sums it up for us.
We recommend drinking Appleton Estate V/X on a beach somewhere; if that's not possible, crank up the heat in your house, sprinkle sand in your living room and crack open a bottle to emulate the experience.

My early assessment pretty much matches that; anyone who is "into" good brandy would find the transition easy and pleasant. And, as with a good brandy, mixing it with ANYTHING seems sacrilegious. Want a Cuba Libre? Buy the PR crap, mon.

Only 20 bucks? I pay that much for Sailor Jerry or Bicardi. May have to pick up a bottle and give it a try.
