My 12 year old son has joined band.
He's really good on piano, and keyboard, but wants to play Sax.
I'm looking for cool solos to hike his interest.
Here's my favorit

Trane might be an inspiration. At least as much of an inspiration as you'll find other than perhaps Bird.

And, as a bonus I'll throw down some Bird and Coleman Hawkins.

Go solo too much and you might go blind.

Search out Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Jimmy Hamilton (more clarinet than sax, but both) and Charlie Parker. If the kid is not sufficiently inspired by them, switch to a cello and Google Morey Amsterdam.

WOW!!!
Those are great! The best to your son, the sax is too hard for me to work. Too expensive to "try" out. I stuck with strings, and keyboards much easier (too me).

Right out of the gate, you got some GREAT responses!! Those are all excellent choices. Coltrane is one of my favorites. As for modern players (and theatrics), check out Jeff Coffin...plays two horns at once and is bad ass.

Good on you for encouraging your son to take up a great instrument. My son is a jock, but he is a killer sax player, made it from beginning band in middle school to wind ensemble in 2 years. Studied with the conductor of UCLA's symphony...but he would rather play basketball. I think more kids should get involved with music, it helps in more ways that you know.

....and soloing is perfectly natural and he shouldnt be ashamed.

Right on, bassman.

The misfit percentage in the music program at Santa Rosa (CA) High School was pretty low compared to the rest of the student body. The music participants all got better grades overall too.

Thats absolutely right! Kids in music programs generally stay out of trouble more, focus more and develop other skills faster than kids who sit idle. But, alas, funding for these things was swept under the rug with other unimportant things like MS research, social security, etc....gotta win them important wars, ya know.
