View Full Version : More Amateur Radio Spectrum?
The FCC has proposed (http://www.arrl.org/news/view/united-states-supports-secondary-amateur-radio-allocation-at-461-469-and-471-478-khz) an additional amateur VLF radio frequency secondary spectrum allocation at 461-469 and 471-478 kHz. Now, if only I had enough room for an antenna for those frequencies.

Is this a 1 watt limit? I couldn't see the power limitations.
Would a quarter wavelength antenna be in the quarter mile range?
No idea what the power limit will be.
Meantime, it's time to start winding those coils for physically short verticals... you should be done about the time we get the allocation.

This is pretty sweet! Lot's of fun to be had in that range :)

I'm really interested in it. I did a little research over the last few minutes and it seems that most people who are now playing with it (there's a limited experimental program at the moment) use bottom-loaded vertical antennas that aren't significantly larger than the typical amateur radio vertical.

I used to listen below the BC band a lot in the 60's and 70's. Digging out Russian beacons was tough, but really interesting.
As are all the weirdo whistlers and other cool noises.

Oh WAY cool! I already have a transmitter and loading coils built for 1750 meters. Easy to convert that over to this new band. Yeah baby!
