So if a cop tries to ticket one of you fine NY residents, have him read this article (http://www.arrl.org/news/new-york-judge-declares-amateur-radio-is-not-a-cell-phone).

We have those cops here too, ii carry in the van the published text of the law that specifically excludes ham radio from handsfree phone use or get a fine, which is 150 Euro......

Oh well.. stupidity is worldwide, not hindered by borders or languages ;)

Good call by the judge but ... based on what our resident NY police expert has taught us, you will probably have to argue your case in court.

Tell the cop? Surely you jest! (I know, you're serious, and don't call you Shirley)

Most police officers do not appreciate it if you argue with them, even if you're right and they're wrong. It doesn't matter that they shouldn't take it personally -- they do.

Even if you win the battle, you can lose the war... if they want to, they can always find something to cite you on. It can be a bogus citation, but it's a citation none the less.

In the City of Pittsburgh, some officers LOVE to issue citations. They get paid OT for court appearances, even if they lose. Part of the Union contract.

Take the ticket and discuss it with the judge. Just hope it's not a judge who considers the local cops "his" cops.

Probably true. I know little about that kind of stuff. OTOH, the case is precedent setting and can be used as a defense. Well, it should have merit if used as an example when a similar case comes up. Umm... maybe not.
