Great big round of congrats to our bartender, who just texted me the good news.

This calls for an on-the-air celebration/imbibathon as only The Island is capable of.

Charles is going to text me with a frequency...or better still...let's all find one and get the party started. Say, oh-dark-thirty on 75M - maybe 40 if we can find a clear spot.

So--what's the frequency, Kenneth? With my pitiful little station I doubt that I can be heard out there on 75 m but I'll give it a try.

Thank You All. Each and everyone of you. Thanks to Jim for sending me the book. I was a bit cocky. I thought I could study it in a week like I did for General.
Drove past the hamfest but didn't actually go in. Old lady. On the way back we stopped at that West**** something mall two exits north of HWY 321 on HWY 85. Old lady. On the way back we had to stop at that outlet mall in Gaffney. Off exit 90 on HWY 85 in SC. Old lady. You know the one, it has a Bose outlet store but there is nothing outlet deal about it. 25 seconds and I saw the entire line. It was more like a cellphone boutique. I walked to the other end and stepped into the Out Back steakhouse and went straight to the bar. One Dewars and one beer later I came back out, not feeling quite, adjusted.
Oh well, still had another 50 miles to go.
Home? No no, not yet. Old lady. Grocery shopping but not before, let's have dinner at ****'* ... OK. Beer. Fajita Beer. I had fish. Old lady had steak. I just wanted something light. OK, now grocery store and ... bloody Clemson traffic! Everybody hates Clemson traffic! Home? Eventually.

Home ... loose dog ... cats in trees ... mosquitoes en-mass.
Catch dog ... feed dog ... talk cats down ... feed cats ... mosquito bite salve ... warm air leaking out of ears ... brain farts.

All of this would be of little significance, but, I went to bed at 12:30AM and laid there with my eyes closed until 4AM. Got up and drank a beer ... laid in bed some more with my eyes closed. So I got up and turned the computer on and turned on TWC and listened to Earl. Popped back on the Island. Rolled over and closed eyes. Laid in bed with eyes closed for 3 more hours and the 8AM alarm went off. Reset alarm for 10AM. I think I sort of slept.

Ugh! Whatever! Coffee! Shower! Help Old lady with her knee scooter. (old lady foot surgery two weeks ago) Review map! Go!

Thanks Again Everyone! Each and all of you!
Should I get coffee?

Thanks again everyone. Allow me to reiterate, it wasn't as easy as General but consider that I have also not done any real, honest to goodness studying since after high school. The SARC club did mix it up a bit. Some of the questions and choices are not in the same multiple choice order as in the exact VEC question pool as it is published. The Tech test I took in 1989 was exactly like it appeared in the published study manual. I can say the same about the General exam I took in 2008. Also of note. About 4 of the questions on my exam were not worded exactly the same as the published question pool but if you read it properly, it expressed exactly the same question.
These are just observation and not complaints.

I want to thank the people of the SARC club for their cooperation and friendliness. The VEC team and the club officers were all very professional and helpful. (I realize that adding club is redundant but it is better than just saying SARC. LOL! which is Shelby Amateur Radio Club)

Thanks Again :)
After I completed the journey and was actually starting to roll off down the road, I went back inside because it occurred to me that I didn't see the part on the form about keeping my old call. The gentlemen inside told me that keeping the old call is now automatic unless you specify on the form that you want a new call and showed me where it was on the paperwork.

I did not know this but there it was. In 2008, the upgrade to General, the form had a place on it to check if you wished to keep your old callsign.

Colorful Gay Charles?

Next Tuesday, I'm starting an extra upgrade class given by my ARC and should be ready to sit for my test by the end of October. I'm trying to decide if I should ask for a sequential 2x2 call sign or keep my old one. A problem with my current one is that it makes it really obvious that I'm a relative newbie to ham radio. On the other hand, it is fun to send in Morse. Not that I'm good enough at copying code to actually go on the air yet, but I will be eventually. And if I change, I'd have to replace the ham license plate on my pickup.

You're probably better off... Ever since they dropped the code, all those new extras have driven even the ugly 1x2 and 2x1 callsigns into obscurity. For a small sum, could we offer you KG4CG? :stickpoke:

I was going to take the test the first time on the third Saturday of July but didn't feel ready. Then came the third Saturday of August but of course, did I get any sleep? I didn't get much sleep (2 hours) before Shelby but taking the test at 2pm helped that I guess.

oh, license plate collecting is.

At one point, I had over 15,000 plates, and I still have about 4000. It's kind like of like collecting stamps, except with oil involved.

I still look around for plates once in awhile, and I find things like the attached; http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q275/nx6d/ham%20radio/SANY1266.jpg

21 Nevada flats are pretty rare, and anything Okinawa in good shape is tough. I got these off of craig'slist locally from some older guy in east Sac for $100, with some other junk he thought was valuable. My wife actually found the listing, and the seller said he got over 40 calls.

And you thought ham ops were nuts.

Carl, you want to try 75m tonight?
