I want to get some Everclear or similar pure grain spirits. Unfortunately Nanny New York doesn't permit its sale. But, I was told they sell it in New Jersey. If so I'll have to take a run over there one of these days.

I've never seen it for sale anywhere around here. But I'll have to look into it. Otherwise I can get it in Jersey (hopefully) or Maryland.
In college organic chem lab we used to have drums of it. Pure reagent and pharmaceutical grade absolute Ethanol suitable for internal use, pharmaceutical preparation.

According to info here , the 190 proof stuff is not available in NY , it's unclear if the 151 is or not . Some folks use it to make their own custom liquors . I have recipe I'll share with you in PM that you may enjoy , a very special liquor created by a friend of mine , an avid gardener . ;)
Everclear is not available here in California either. If you want some, you have to drive to Nevada where damned near everything is available--including stuff you don't even want to know about.

I have a favorite way to use a bottle of Everclear. Take a med to large watermelon. Cut out a plug at both ends perpendicular to the center. Place an open bottle of Everclear in one plug.Let the liquor drain halfway. The draining may take 2 hours. Remove, and place in other plug hole. When drained replace plugs, set out in direct sunlight for at least 8 hours. Place in fridge over night. Enjoy.
The slices are sweet, and potent. After 2 pieces of cold sweet water melon, I was talking like thisssh. Vodka, or 151 rum works as well. There is a refrigerator version on you tube. I have only personally done the sun roasted version.

I asked for PGA and Everclear at the local state run ABC and they said nada, no chance, don't sell it, can't have it.
Wish they'd hurry up and privatize those stores here. The state gubmint is just plain not good at it and it looks like the fricken DMV, but with bottles everywhere.
Not a very appealing shopping experience. Virginia could learn a lot from Tennessee.

OK, not only do we Everclear, we have all the trendy "moonshines" being sold under trendy old time names and logos. Everclear is cheap, it will take paint off a metal wall and even when cut in half will still remove the lining from your esophagus. If you were to divide it by 6 equal portions you would still be drinking 31.66 proof. That's almost 16% alcohol and that's a lot of drinks for a small party. One quart mixed would yield 6 quarts and that's a gallon and a half.

Hello.
In Mexico, pure grain alcohol comes in grades, like hats.
The real cheap stuff will have no markings, the better stuff will have an X or 2, XX, or more.
2 XXs and you have Dos Equis,
http://www.buckaroo.us/xfactor.shtml
The X thing is subjective but the proof is not.
However, rotgut alcohol is nearly pure grain alcohol that is very cheap, a 5 gallon measure into your container will set you back around $12.
This is about as cheap as it gets.
I buy the little bit better grade and some cheap Vodka as well as Tequila, all the cheap stuff.
Rum can be had that is of very high quality at a good price.

Seems to me it should be available everywhere, assuming it has the appropriate state tax stamp on it. I know we can get it here (in ND). I remember drinking it. Once. When I was in college, I threw up for a night, and a day. Lime vodka had similar results, but that's another story.
When I was in the Navy (a Corpsman), back in the early 70's, one guy got a hypodermic syringe and a 10-gauge needle and injected a bodacious-size cantaloupe with Everclear, at a huge party we had near Seattle. Results similar to suddenseer's post above.

Seems I have a similar recollection. The version I recall was simpler... Take a watermelon and cut a plug from each end. Set it ass-up in a Coleman drink cooler (or similar). Pour the high-octane stuff in the top of the watermelon and fill your cup from the tap in the cooler. Ditto on the vodka or rum. I don't recall anyone actually eating the watermelon afterwards.

My pop made the stuff for years from potatoes. My x's brother was over once and asked for a glass of it. I poured him 3 ounces with a warning.
He downed the whole thing in one gulp.
His eyes lit up, he grabbed his head as it went down to rest on the table for a few seconds. When he came back up he had a nosebleed big time and he didn't even bang his nose on the table.

As for a VERY tasty everclear recipe.... Get a good size jar of maraschino cherries. Dump all the red juice out of it. Pour it to the top with everclear. It will turn white! close the lid and put it back...BACK into the fridge (you may wanna put a skull and crossbones or a Mr. Yuck sticker on it so the kids dont get into it) Give it about a week. A month is better. They juice turns red again and they are not only delicious but freekin deadly <kaff-kaff> Oh and if you mix the juice with 7-up...:yum:

One thing for sure. We don't need a study to tell us that drinking is good for us. We KNOW it's good for us.
I personally feel that drinking and drugging are good for a persons health. Different drugs have different effects. Some drugs perk up the mind and make the person more productive. Other drugs like weed mellow you out and help you relax. Others kill pain (mental and physical) which can enable a person to be more focused. Booze is great when you just want to let yourself go and party hard in that anything and everything goes kinda way. I won't even get into the psychedelics, i.e. acid, peyote, etc. Those are blessed sacraments. They are awesome and everyone should trip at least once.
People who don't drink or drug tend to be high strung. They cannot relax. The stress eventually takes it's toll on them. I'll bet if they would just smoke 1 joint a day or have one or two glasses of scotch every day they'd live longer and be healthier.
Nothin like gettin loaded and laid every night.

It's not a matter of "having the cajones" its more a matter of common sense. Absolute alcohol is a bit too strong to apply to the tissues of the mouth, throat, and digestive tract. It can be extremely irritating. It is also very strong, remember it is close to 2.5 times the strength of the "hard liquor" that most people are used to. Thus a single shot of everclear is like having 2.5 shots of regular 80 proof liquor, something to keep in mind if you are drinking Everclear straight or using it to make mixed drinks. I would advise mixing it with water or something. Drinking straight azeotropic 95% grain alcohol straight is not advisable.

Yeah. I saw a young woman do it because she said she didn't want no watered down alcohol. Shot went down and 10 seconds later she was puking blood for nearly 15 minutes. I told everyone to give her milk but she wanted water which made the pain last longer. It's just cheap sugar liquor and water does not absorb it like milk or bread. The only thing I use it for is to make extracts. Afterwards I cut it in half with distilled water. Then later when I actually use the extract, I cut it in half again. Vanilla bean extract is simply wonderful.

To my knowledge, Everclear, contains no sugar, albeit the sugars involved in the initial fermentation. Everclear is as close to pure absolute ethanol as you can get, short of pure reagent grade ethanol for lab or pharmeceutical use.
Ethanol is extremely irritating to the mucous linings of the throat and stomach. It's too irritating to drink straight, regardless of how tough anyone might think they are.

In and of itself it's not but alcohols are structurally related to sugars and, most often made from sugars.. At a 190 proof (95%) rating it matters little what the ethanol was derived from because at that level of purity you are left with nothing but pure ethanol and water. You can't purify it any further by distilling because the azeotrope (95% alcohol 5% water) has a lower boiling point that the alcohol itself so 95% is as far as the fractional distillation will take it.
According to its label , Everclear is grain alcohol .

The only I've ever used Everclear for is removing varnish. I think that's what it's best suited for.
It seems to me like an economical way to get alcohol. A 750 ml bottle of 190 proof everclear = approx 2.5 liters of regular 80 proof alcohol (i.e. whiskey, vodka, gin, etc) as far as alcohol content goes. Now, it sells for about $15.00 per bottle so for 15 dollars so, it's the equivalent of paying $15.00 for close to 2.0 liters of 80 proof liquor. A 750 ml bottle of the cheapest 80 proof vodka costs around $10.00. So if you buy the cheapest vodka it would cost around $25.00 to equal the alcoholic content of one 750 ml bottle of everclear for $15.00, overall a savings of $10.00. Check my figures if you will as I'm just rattling this off in my head as I go along.
The way i see it, when I do drink alcohol I drink not for taste but for the tranquilizing effect of the alcohol. I could care less about flavour, to me it all tastes horrible and the idea is to wash it down fast as possible and get rid of the disgusting taste. So by buying Everclear I am getting a lot more bang for the buck. All that needs to be done before drinking is to mix it 1 part Everclear with about 2 - 2.5 parts water to get roughly an 80 proof drinkable alcohol source. Also, since it's 95% azeotropic ethanol it is quite pure.
As an added bonus it can be used at full strength (190 proof/95%) as a general purpose fast evaporating alcohol, for cleaning and sterilizing, as a fuel, etc. So it's a win win. More bang for the buck for drinking and full strength for other purposes.
I understand the process . Another post implied that there was a shortcut in the distillation process . I guess the end product is the same , regardless .

Right on target, John. The only fault I can find with this is mixing it with water. With so many (fairly inexpensive!) taste sensations out there, it seems almost a sin to mix it with something as pedestrian as water. Dare say, I might even prefer Kool-Aid to plain water.

Okay, the purpose of mixing it with water is not nessesarily to drink it that way but to bring it down to a more reasonable 80-90 proof level. At that point you still have a rather potent 80-90 proof liquor that can be further mixed and blended with a wide variety of taste sensations. Of course as you point out why not just mix it with something right from the git go. That sounds perfectly good to me.

When I was in high school I distilled a jug of my grandfathers old wine we had in a closet. I didn't consider that it was not really wine anymore but a concoction of volatile chemicals churning their way to vinegar. I drank a bottle of it the last day of school to celebrate the last day... At first it felt like alcohol but also like...something else... Some girl drove me home in her VW Beetle. I made it into the house and puked into the toilet. I passed out in bed and puked clear liquid several times. This stuff was wicked. It was dark when I woke up, I had a blasted headache and was sick to my gut. it took 3 days for that crap to clear out of my system. Home made , distilled , poison hooch.... it was nasty stuff.
