Hello.

1, If the police are in pursuit it is most likely that they have already retrieved your registration.
2, flipping the bird or other signs of affection will have little effect on whatever type of license plate you display, if bubba is going to kick your arse it will happen no matter what.

That's Cold Man!That might be. He did die. I was able to get my callsign as a plate. I had to wait 12 years for hhim to die. I wanted my callsign on my plate. Many other hams get this , I just had to wait. Now nack to my original post. Any other hams have their callsign on their license plate? Please post a pic.

they gotta catch me first.
At age 20 I was being chased by a 1959 Cadillac full of biker dudes hell bent on tuning the crap outta my @ss for trying to romance their leader's babe (gawd she was hot).
I had a 1964 Opel.
They were gaining ground so my friend said to turn here. Turned out to be someone's driveway. I maneuvered through a few back yards and came out onto a different street. The Caddy couldn't get through, getting stuck trying to stay with us.

What happens when Mr. S&W meets Mr. Glock?

I just googled my license number and didn't easily find it. I found pay sites where, presumably, it would have been easy, but no free sites. So....at least for now, it's nominally cheaper and easier to lookup call signs, which is trivial. You can do it right here!!

Back in the day I loved call letter license plates. Today, I'm happy to be anonymous.

So, you alread had your call but couldn't get a plate? WTF? Did somebody bootleg your call on a vanity plate? I don't get what you're saying. Or are you saying it took 12 years to get the call you wanted?

And then there was this amusing anecdote. A dear friend, Bill Martin, K2OMD, now SK, had call letter plates and he had to stop for a car accident. Somebody saw the "MD" on his plates and rushed up to him for assistance since he assumed Bill was a doctor! R.I.P., Bill.

When I applied for a callsign plate to my dismay there was already a vanity plate issued for N8TB. I guess the person's name was Nate B. Ham radio plates are cheaper than 'regular' vanity plates. I would check the availability each year I renewed the plates. It took 12 years for it to free up. Obviously my callsign is a vanity as well. I was in the second gate if I remember correctly. I got my 3rd choice. I did notice a person waited for Mr. Cotton the Detroit FCC field office to die. His call was W8DX. He conducted the ham, and commercial exams at the field office. He was a nice guy, but made me sweat bullets waiting for the exam to be graded.

Well I'll be...!!!! I've wondered if that would happen (a non-ham with call letters on the plates), and there it is. That is a REAL BUMMER!!! Not only for the people whose calls go "unavailable" but in general about ham radio. It's sad to see that the states are so hell-bent on the extra $$$ from vanity plates that they'll allow this to happen. Ah, well, sigh...I guess, "So what else is new?"

When did Mr. Cotton work in Detroit. Was he there in '60 or '68. If so, I guess he's the guy that examined me - and who, BTW, had to flunk a guy on the sending test!!! What a moran!

I am very careful out here in the west when driving. Get too antsy and bullets start flying by default...i just want to get where im going so i learned to keep my cool, let people do what they are going to do, let them "win" by getting in front of me, maintain 80mph, etc.

For the longest time, i wanted vanity plates. Though i do love my hobby (the rigs always on when im at the desk), i have decided against it in recent years. This city was built, funded and founded on crime and it doesnt disappoint. I dont need to be advertising anything that may indicate to the feeble and desperate that i may have anything they want...my truck is nice enough as it is.

And when all else fails, im a Glock man. ;)

What a moran!I was there in the mid 70's. He looked old to me, but I was a teenager so everyone over 20 looked old. He seemed like a fixture. He passed on a few years ago. There were people like vultures waiting for him to die to get that way cool callsign W8DX. I settled for my initials. He probably was your examiner too.

Been thinking of getting plates. You can get them for free in Alaska if you have an HF rig in your car. I just have not gotten around to putting 800 bucks worth of radio into my 400 dollar truck. :) Guess I could shell out the 30 bucks for a personal plate and save the hassle.

This is on the south end of my Dodge pickup: (there IS a 2011 sticker on it now)
AZ charges the same as a regular vanity plate $25 extra/yr) for ham plate (they only issue 1)

A mono band 10 meter rig would suffice?

Has to have 5 band coverage in order to get the free plate. Law was back in the day that a Trooper could pull over anyone with a ham plate and ask them to relay a message for them. Probably still on the books, but has not been enforced in many years. Even now there are places on the road system that have no cell phone coverage.

http://doa.alaska.gov/dmv/plates/amradio.htmWow, you have to be a General class, or higher. I would think this made sense up to the mid 1990's
I have always read that it takes a very special person to live up there. My aunt, and uncle live somewhere outsde the city of Kenai. My uncle is a retired state trooper. My aunt is an Inuit. She is 75 years old, and looks like a sexy 40 year old lady. They sent me a video of catching a salmon for breakfast. I so much want to come up there to visit, but I do not think I have what it takes to live up there.

If you ever come up for a visit, be sure and let me know. Kenai is a really beautiful part of the state. The drive there is unbelievable. If you stick to the road system living up here is not all that bad. Just a longer than normal winter and some of the more common wildlife can hurt you if you get too close.

3235 This is my plate, though it is not on my daily driver, which is my Ford diesel pickup. They charge by weight here, and "The Blue Beast" tips the scales just shy of 7000 pounds. The amateur plate is on my second car, which used to belong to my daughter. When she bought a new VW Jetta, her Ford Escort sedan came back to Mom and Dad. I have to fix the A/C and replace a CV joint.

I concur. I lived in Kenai for a spell before moving across the inlet to live on Mt. Redoubt. Mike is right, some of the critters up there will jack you up, so the best bet, be well armed. ;) No reason to not level the field. I lived in an old army tent at the base of an active volcano for a while, no roads, no nothing for many miles in all directions, you're on their turf then! Also, on that side of the inlet, the native folk dont care for whitey too much either...had a couple of rifle showdowns with the locals.

Considering the giant prison yard i live in now, i would move back up there in a heartbeat. Thats the thing about the great state of Alaska, you may leave it, but it never leaves you. I miss it a lot sometimes.
