Wee Willie must be slumming it. Dumpster diving by the guy who has his own lake? Times MUST be tough.

Notice Wee Willie still went wee, wee, wee all the way home.

As much as I think Willie is a dork, that would be a cool acquisition.

I had a couple of those radios back in the day, only 10 watts, but you got 2 meters, 220 and 440.

For a UV3 I would dumpster dive. I doubt if I would break in a place though. The OM has keys so he could be charged with a lower crime. Maybe the guy who worked there that told him "no", knows what he has, and is a ham, or knows a ham.

It's interesting how they all applaud his criminal act of stealing the radio.

There had to be some way he could have obtained that thing for the asking. It was in a dumpster, so what value would it have held for say, the owner of the property?

You're outside the clique, and will probably be fairly well ignored. You should have mentioned that you're an Islander. That seems to be a prime attention getter over there ...

It is a shame that these self rightous people do not see the folly in doing a morally wrong thing. I do indeed pity them. Most of them claim to be some kind of christian. Their judgement day may be a shock to the senses.

Hello.

I got banned before I swam to the Island.
Now, except for that occasional NeoCon who may attack I pretty much am left alone.
But I no longer debate anything, that place is very much one sided.
As far as a dumpster and theft goes, that I am not sure of, as the policies vary.
I would have tried to ask someone higher up the chain.

Comparing a recycle center to a dump is quite a stretch. Big difference.
That was outright theft. (if it happened at all)

Wee Willie has been making up his own rules for a long time. Every time he posts, my morality sense goes off the scale.

I particularly like this one by K4KYV:

If somebody throws something away, it is abandoned property. I consider it free for the taking and never call anyone's attention to it, let alone ask permission. Is the sheriff really going to take the time to make a special trip out to investigate a small piece of trash "stolen" off a dump pile? There is one way to find out. Don't ask if you don't want to know. The reality might surprise you. If you took it from a dumpster that is on private property, and being that this area was fenced and locked up that's exactly where it was, that's stealing. Many companies and housing units operate this way. I have seen people arrested for stealing stuff exactly like this. The big difference was they didn't post their five fingered indiscretions on the web on a site where your address is also available. Anyone, anywhere reading it could really make this an a big issue.

My recycle center has it plainly stated. NO SCAVENGING OR PICKING. I will admit though, as a young teen, I did find a box-o-pr0n at the dump and managed to get it into the back of the truck without my dad catching me. I had the most popular storage shed/library for a while...then dad found it. back to the dump it went.

Hmmm. Let's look at this objectively:

A relatively rare Drake UV-3 in unknown condition is transferred (given, sold, traded, abandoned... whatever, title transferred) to the recycling center.

Wee Willie wants it.

He is prepared to remove it from the recycling center without permission or further compensation to the center for some modicum of the potential value of the unit.

Now, I'm not a lawyer etc etc... but this sure sounds like theft to me.

Bottom line is once title is transferred, it belongs to the recycling center to do with as they will. The goniff can't just take it without their blessing.

a simple question.
the recycling centers here in georgia are more or less fenced in areas with a garbage guard and multiple dumpsters.
the guard is there to make sure that the garbage is put in one dumpster and is in the special bag that the county charged you a dollar for and that all recyclables are seperated and put in there proper dumpsters.
the reason for the fence is not to keep people from taking what has been dumped but to keep people from dumping illegally without the special dollar bags after hours.
would it be theft in that situation? it was thrown away.
now as for going after hours, that is a different situation and would be considered trespassing on govt. property. so yes still a crime. i would have bribed the garbage guard.

I'm going with the assumption that once something gets to a recycling center it becomes another entities raw materials. Now, rescuing something from a landfill/dump seems morally correct and commendable.

to be honest i believe all the dumpsters go to the same landfill. but as long as the county gets its buck per 20 gal bag they are happy.

Funny - that thread (and the entire Zed) is un-viewable this morning.

"Relatively rare" UV3? I've got three of them here plus two PS3s and a sheet-load of spare parts, a remote mounting kit and so forth. Who wants to buy one? They're all up for sale.

PT closed the thread, as well he should.

What can we learn from this exchange?

At least four of the Zed "Cool Kids" openly advocate theft.

If we're gonna break one rule, boys and girl, why not break them ALL?

Suppose we ought to start the ball rolling with a ham radio infraction - or should we proceed straight to meth dealing and/or pimpery?

The Arkala cluster had a big problem with callsign hijackers and anonymous trolls earlier in the year, and AFAIK went with a different access model. That may have had something to do with it.

That may have had something to do with it.There was quite a rash of those for awhile. We may make fun of K6VVA's recently dismissed FCC petition, but that was the root cause of it... the Locust wanted legal teeth to go after a call sign hijacker who misused his. Not that I blame him...

Maybe CryptBoi got tired of it, or got booted out altogether? We should be so lucky. I'm fairly sure that was him, the comments posted had that same snarky feel to them.

Yeah, mostly on the local repeaters. He was net control for the Wakefield weather center not too long ago during some sort of weather related event. Mostly just incredibly boring. Heard him chasing DX on 75 meters before ... decent signal, but he's one of the dolts that repeats his call every 2.3 seconds, irregardless if the DX station is transmitting or not.

I actually talked to him on a Richmond repeater about 2 years ago when he was heading to DC. I gave him a heads up on some traffic problems in front of him, and gave him an alternate route. He was actually pleasant that day, but it was before he threatened to sue us here ...
