We had the XYL's family in town over the weekend to celebrate her mother's 86th birthday. Her brother George stayed here and on Friday he was wandering around in the back yard while I was doing some weed-whacking and happened on a 6 meter J-pole I'd built months ago but never got around to erecting. He suggested we do so, I told him that I didn't have the necessary hardware and, besides, I'd promised that I'd stay off the roof until I got medical insurance again. Looking around the yard, he came up with a solution so hillbilly that I just had to post a photo:

I'm going out today to get me a pickup truck to put on blocks on the front lawn.

(The antenna works perfectly, BTW. And, of course, it's not going to stay this way permanently)

You want a trailer park, or a trailer subdivision? You'll have a real yard in the latter.

That's not hillbilly. The politically correct term is "Southern engineering"

Red Green and his buddy Bill would have improved it with "Northern Engineering"... I see no sign of duct tape. :neener:

Or bailing wire! JB Weld!!! These southerners are losing their touch, I tell ya!We believe in simplicity. In this instance, no JB Weld or bailing wire was required. We save the bailing wire and JB Weld for important things, like tying up that loose engine on the crop duster.

But what about mechanical stability? No duct tape at least?

I would have said that if I'd realized that there was someone else who would get the joke!

I know saltwater is favorable to propagation but didn't realize that extended to hot water.

That's a little too regional for this bunch, but what the hell.

Glad you popped in. If you're on 40 or 75, we can share tales of E. San Diego County.

If you have baling wire, why don't you have any dipoles up?

I do, they just don't show up in the photo. Got one end tied to the trailer and the other to a big ol' gum tree.

Funny you should say that. Just recently in our local paper there was an article about Oxycontin abuse. In case you don't know, Oxycontin is often called "Hillbilly Heroin." However, some software that the paper uses to avoid a "bad word" from slipping by and offending anyone automatically replaced the word hillbilly with mountaineer without anyone noticing. This resulted in a lot of confusion on the part of the readers--"Mountaineer Heroin? WTF?"
