Yes - operational and in the trunk of "Longhead's" car at the Findlay hamfest one year.

Oh, wait...that was a pair of 8877s. Nevermind...

Nooooo, not me! They have this new CB'er bent over the barrel and everybody in a 100 mile radius is taking a shot at putting the pork in him. He paid $1,100 buck for it based on the claim that it had new tubes in it.

He has 7 elements on a 37.5 foot boom 50 feet in the air, the amp is working like a freight train but, he is not a "Super Bowl Operator". He can dominate 39 other channels but, they will not acknowledge him on Channel 6 because they don't know him; "10,000 watts don't make you 10-8 and, long-winded only makes your breath stank".

Pictured above is a 3 tube 3-500Z amplifier, the owner added 2 more tubes to make it a 5-tuber however, he needed more B+ so, what does he do?

Read the story!

He told me about this incident back in November and I dismissed it along with most of his other CB conversation but, he was not lying this time!

ROFL my former "Amplifer-fixing" Ass off! That's him pictured above.

Have you ever "heard" or heard of an operator called "Big O" around your area?

.

The problem with it and, most homebrewed amplifiers are that they are built around parts that have been collected over a long period of time, the physical topography is a joke. Once they have all the parts, they have to find a case to hold them all in. Clearly, that piece of equipment was built around that mile-long Load Variable and those bulky oil filled capacitors.

The thing is just too big, too heavy and now, too JINXED to touch; tain't nuthin' but bad news and bad luck associated with that amplifier.

nope. but if the pic is of the anderson owner. then it is prob. someone i knew as dirtrunner or nighthawk (only 2 black 11 meter operators around here) and they havent been active in years. dirtrunner used to run about 5k

and truthfully I only know of 1 guy would even be capable of building something like this. and i know he didnt. so i doubt it was built in anderson

Panty Snatcher!

We used to have a real nice black fella in Monmouth who claimed to have 5K from 2 steel tubes and called himself BlackJack. I always knew when I was with-in 15 miles of home when I was trucking.....Old BlackJack would shut down all 40 channels to everything but stations that were very close. He died or moved on........don't know what happened to him.

Then we had old Shotgun...He was a drunken asshole. He has something that had 10 tubes and a Cobra 140 something base... 142 maybe. He was a huge pain in the ass. All over 10M, and then one day he went silent. I found out later his signal was so dirty that he was bleeding over onto the State Police 46MHz radios, and they went and knocked at his door......

Back when CB was (more) popular in the area, I used to know a lot of the 'Bowl regulars. Some eventually got ham tickets, some got busted, some got bored...but time caught up with most of them. Only one or two active strappers in this vicinity and unless things are rolling you never hear a peep out of them.

Sad in a way. There aren't a lot of people filling the RF hobbyist void, and those who do seem all too enmeshed in the EmComm boondoggle.

I was told that in the "good ole days" a guy by the name of Cyril Balwah 9Y4LQ had a seriously QRO setup.

This is well beyond legal power - he was doing at least 10kw.

He used an old pole pig that he got from a friend who worked at the electric co to power it, and wired it directly to his electric panel.

When he keyed up, if he wasn't careful the whole neighborhood would go dark because the fuse would trip on the transformer on the pole.

yup, not wimpy SSB, but 10kw carrier on AM. Musta been a helluva setup. Man those guys sure knew how to have fun.

Reminds me of Tesla in Colorado Springs when he burned out the dynamo at El Paso Electric and the whole city went dark. Cyril will just have to try a little harder, like powering the transmitter directly off the HV primaries. Oh, I know a Collins 21E on 160 with a special 480V 3 phase hookup powering it, no backward pig Trinidadian Engineering either.
