Trying to figure out what apps I need for using packet on Linux.

Also, how in the hell to configure ax.25's stack. Seems like there are bits and pieces everywhere, but no real "How to".

Hmm...Linux being the worlds best and most prevalent home operating system.....I thought you guys would like have a metric assload of apps and games and toys and stuff.

They're all there :) Do you know how to configure PPTP connections on Winderz?

It's documentation, that's all. In this area, the documentation is lacking, to say the least. All the parts are there, however.

But really, this is more inter-networking stuff, not normal home usage.

Are you looking to do this via TNC run in 'host mode' or by sound card alone?

Well, sound card, since soundmodem is out there (How to use it I'm lost on).

Next question:

Will your communications consist primarily of keyboard-to-keyboard operations (or keyboard to BBS) or are you wanting to run a full-fledged node and/or BBS?

Right now, until I figure out how it works, my keyboard to a BBS. Maybe later, a full fledged node.

Ok, so the process has moved ahead.

Configured Soundmodem using 'soundmodemconfig', and after wrestling with it, some keys I've found:

* /usr/sbin/soundmodem needs to be chmod'd to 4755, to give it suid (Run as root).
* /usr/bin/soundmodemconfig needs to be ran as root, sudo'd
* /usr/bin/xastir needs to be chmod'd 4755, it needs to run as root in order to grab the ports
or
* /dev/sm0 (Or /dev/soundmodem0) needs to be chmodded 777 (World RW)
* Your IP address for sm0 needs to NOT be a routable address, or needs to be a AMPR address. Funny things happen if you give it an address inside of your network :)

So, I've gotten my computer to makes noises when I send a packet out (via Xastir). Not transmitting yet. But, Xastir doesn't seem to see any packets from the local APRS systems (I have a stereo dubbing cable from radio to PC). And soundmodem doesn't seem to see any packets coming through the system either.

Proper baud rate (1200) selected?

Looks like it. 1200 in axports.conf, and in soundmodem config...

Does all this mean that there really is a packet network in New York? I thought that packet on VHF was almost a dead letter.....

Closest thing is a couple APRS nodes, AFAIK. Funny thing? Right now I'm on IRC chat talking through the setup problems.

Soundmodem is up and running :) It's looking at Xastir right now. Turns out, I was using the wrong sound device (/dev/dsp instead of plughw1:1). Changed that, and Xastir is now seeing APRS traffic.

Next step in the project: Synchronet + AX25
