View Full Version : FT-1000 - opinions, please
What are the group's thoughts on this rig?
Certain serial number ranges or models to stay away from?
I'm thinking about picking one up for use in our shack's 'multiplier' position...'DSG's "radio station", as it were.

There are several versions of the FT-1000. Is it an original 1000, 1000-MP, 1000-D, or 1000 Mark-V?

School a fella on the differences - I'm shopping around for one. What's the best of the bunch?

I'm not intimately familiar with all the differences, but the 1000-D had 2 truly independent RXs. You could, if you wanted to, listen to 10m and 40m at the same time. All the others either had single RX, or dual in-band RX.
The Mark-V was 200 watts. The MP was 100 watts. The D was 200 watts. You'll find some information here (http://www.rigpix.com/yaesu/yaesuselect.htm).
There are 8 1000D 200 wattr's at the contest farm. They take a beating and keep on ticking. Some had a display problem which yeasu did have a fix for. I like em. Nice radio. Just way out of my price range. They still hold there value as well.
Looking at the specs and features, it appears that the -D or the -MP is what I'll end up with.

I don't think there is much different between a -D and an -MP except for the 200W on the -D. The FT-1000 is not much more than an FT-990 and it is relatively primitive. The Mark IV's have digital DSP and several people I have spoken to do not like the results they get from those units.
A close friend of mine has the FT-1000MP and loves it better than his family, I think. The dual receive he uses to work DX. He wears his headset and listens in one ear to the DX station and with the other ear, he listens to the station they are working and follows the path of the DX receiver. He claims to be very successful in landing the DX station with this technique through massive pileups. He does this with CW only.
I think you will be disappointed a bit with the FT-1000, but the other models have a lot going for them.

If you are going to be using an amp on the output anyway, you may as well get the -MP as you really don't need 200W anyway.

The FT-1000 is a top of the line radio. There are rigs on the market today for over $3000.00 that are no better than the FT-1000. I also agree that if you plan to use an amp you don't need the 200 watt model. If you buy one in good shape you won't be disapointed.

I've only actually used the FT-1000D and it was loaded with the optional filters. I thought it was marvelous on SSB/CW receive. I only used it about 2 hours, so not really much of an impression except for the receiver seeming to be exceptional.

I have the MP- Mark V. I wouldn't trade it for anything. The 746 PRO has been idle since the purchase. With the 200 watts, I very seldom turn on the AL-80B.

I've had a 1000D,1000Mp,and currently a MK V Field(last of the breed).
I like the field best.
Best receiver, clean transmitter, excellent audio reports, but just mainly the sound on receive has to be heard to be believed.
The fidelity is wonderful!!!!
Also, the VRF in the receiver is worth the price of admission alone.
I'm comparing mine to a Ten Tec Orion II,Icom 765,Yaesu Ft-102,and an Icom 7000.
Full disclosure, for operating ease, and beauty,my Orion II is the clear winner in my stable, but the Field is a VERY close second.

I am big time into crystals and crystal oscillators. Ten Tec is the only ham equipment manufacturer who cares to build low noise frequency references. That makes a huge difference in what you actually hear.
Wish I could afford one, but say luvvie.

I have used the 1000MP and I liked it a lot. However I believe that K9KXQ has owned most versions of the FT-1000 so if he shows up shoot him a pm.

Definitely the FT-1000 or FT-1000D....These were the last of the analogue radios and Yaesu's finest...They are user friendly, no stupid menu's and all the other garbage they put in later models....The FT-1000 and 1000D still bring premium prices...I have 3 of these radios all purchased new and fully optioned....

The problem with the 1000 family of radios is the well documented, 15 year long, key click problem.
If the radio hasn't had "the fix" it clicks on CW like someone playing castanets.
Google FT-1000 key clicks for the full skinny.

So did my Johnson Adventurer, but there's a fix for that one also.

The key click problem and also the noise blanker problem on the FT1000 radios are easily rectified...Check W8JI Tom's website for simple solutions...
