Let's hope. Distances over 100 miles were not great to listen to. I could hear some of the big gun regulars and Doug made a good effort to pull me out of the noise. I could hear my call a couple of times but as far as communicating goes, it wasn't going to happen.

Earlier I contacted a local friend who is at about 22 miles in a straight line. He liked my audio and he was 20 over fine business. I must do antenna work this week. I think I'm dreading unmasting and remasting.

Start thinking in terms of sporadic E.

I keep receivers on 28.337 (our local hangout), 28.400, 29.000 (AM) and scan 29.600-29.680 (FM) with a fourth.

A CB rig in the shack also monitors 27.385 LSB - that frequency is a good general-purpose propagation indicator.

I game for this evening if you guys want to give it a shot. Tried another mic with an electret element to get a little more punch in the voice range.
I may look for another element this afternoon specifically for vocals and change it out. This Heil I tried Monday seemed to lack what the 901 wanted although it is perfect for the TT. I think the 901 really needs the impedance to be a perfect match, hence the 901 hand mic is 500 ohms and the Heil GM5 is 1000 ohms. Although I could have added a resistor and a switch to the mic connector, I'm not trying that yet.

I believe that years ago, I changed out the element in the mic I tried last night to a full range type. I just want to give the radio what it needs but I don't want to sound tinny. The listener on the other end needs something that will not bring about listening fatigue. It is a careful balance that I wish to achieve.

WØTKX
05-12-2010, 02:25 PM
I'd love to help, but so far you have not been strong enough to tell.

Isn't the mic impedance on that FT-901 more like 50K ohms? No I just checked.

Shure 444D in the low impedance? I like old Turners and Electro Voice.

But I use a Heil GM5 a lot.
