"Shortwave Receivers - Past and Present; 3rd Edition" has been discontinued as well.

Hopefully there will be a fourth.

SW BC stations in the U.S. are down to a hand full now.

And of those, they seem to be religious.

However, the good news is that the standards in shortwave news services like the BBC, Deuchwelle, Radio Canada, Radio Netherlands, Radio Espania all have really good podcasts or at least audio on their sites.

Not all is lost...just mostly.

You need to look beyond the amateur and SWBC bands for prime SWL catches.

Clandestines, utes, bootleggers, MARS/military traffic...it's all out there.

Build a log-yag that's tuned to cover 22-26 MHz, equip it with a rotor, elevate the boom to 20-25 degrees above horizontal and you're ready to listen in on Jovian radio storms (so-called Io B and C events).

From 23-30 MHz there is a sh!t-ton of interesting listening to be had when the 'spots are cooperating; figure 25-30 MHz during Sporadic E events.

The days of Radio Moscow, Radio Tirana and the like may be gone (for now) but that by no means implores that the airwaves are dead.

That sounds interesting.

There's some good stuff around 6950 and 6929 on weekends.

Late last night/early this morning I caught [machine-generated] AM MCW on/about 5.810 MHz. The sending was a little fast for my rusty skills. Casual research thus far shows this to be a NASA frequency. :-?:

WWCR just outside of Nashville,TN used to broadcast on that frequency at times. "You pay, we broadcast it" is about their only rule.

Update: 5.800 MHz, 0100 to 0130 CST [0600-0630 UTC]. Five-character groups of random letters, no Morse numbers. Possibly a Cuban numbers station [using cut numbers]; ENIGMA classification M08 as speculated here. Cloak-and-dagger stuff. :geek

I always liked the strange broadcasts from Cuba as a kid, mostly a female voice reading random numbers and letters, with a very distinct hum on the AM signal.

The story goes that shortly before they abandoned ship, the U.S. Embassy xmitter had developed a distinct hum on it's signal, probably a bad cap somewhere. The xmitter was supposedly a Collins KW-1!

That lady read those numbers and letters for years and the hum stayed the same for years.

Hello.

Shortwave is being replaced by satellite TV.
For the same amount of money as a SW transmitter and operations they can provide an audio channel.
But, for a bit extra they can transmit video.
And, while at it put it on the internet.
Now, for the cost of shipping one can get a FTA satellite dish and receiver complete.
AFRTS can not even come close to the programming provided by the likes of TV Arabia!
Where else are you gonna get programming about impending attacks on the USA?
Wanna build a bomb? they want to help!

Yes, some of the programming really is that crazy, stuff that begs for video.
Anyhow, this is the USA, still free to watch whatever we want, no matter how far off in left field it may be.

Hello.

Actually, Osama bin Laden gave plenty of advance notice on the likes of Al Jazeera, there is no fiction whatsoever.
In fact, the whole point of an act of terror is to advertise the act, for the explicit purpose of terror, so putting this type of action on any means of mass communications is essential to the cause.
And, as far as the satellite offer?

So the likes of DHS would have to have been hiding in a cave to not know about this.
