On another forum I run, we have a very popular "random thoughts" thread. This thread will serve as a place to express something that isn't worthy of starting a thread over, but just to ramble about stupid crap in our lives that likely no one will respond to. :)

------------

So I make a lot of business calls to the UK at a very remarkable rate of $0.02 a minute. Who could complain about that? I called a UK "toll free (800)" number yesterday and I discovered I was being charged $0.2482 a minute. WTF batman?

I'm bummed. I just broke my Leatherman. I'm glad it has that 25 year warranty.

KG4CGC
02-25-2010, 11:20 PM
I'm bummed because the bearing in the tuning shaft of my FM tuner has ceased to roll smoothly and now it's like trying to turn an old squeaky crank that hasn't turned since 1869. I'm also doubly bummed that the bolt holding the flywheel sheared off when I tried to remove it. I am also triply bummed as well since the bearings are solidly sealed and there wasn't anything I could do about it anyway short of replacing it and I don't have a donor.

I sold an 811A amplifier that I accidently spilled bong water on the finals. It loaded into a cantenna, it worked fine. I warned the guy to get some sort of 'soft start'. He couldn't wait to play with his new toy. Guess what he did? I suppose inrush current is not on the new General class exam question pool. :homer:

Same here. Got three Yamahas now; newer than your CR-600, but still great stuff. RX-V1800 runs the living room and garage. Love it. Just put an RX-V465 5.1 system in the shack over Christmas - present to self, and too [strike:1bvfjbxf]cheap[/strike:1bvfjbxf] inexpensive to resist. Old RX-385 stereo RX in the exercise room (yeah, right) still churns out tunes once in a great while.

And before you say it, I threw the old IC-228A on the desk here last weekend. Still works. :)

Well the damn shaft is so hard to turn that I don't even want to use it but, it is the best receiver for FM that I have. I'll open it up again and see if I can booger up a solution. I'm sure it won't turn smoothly afterwards, but I'm sure it will turn easier.
What the hell would make it want to damn near lock down? There is no way to adjust the drag or tension. The bearing or liner or whatever it is, looks to be that white plastic looking stuff that is usually nylon.
It was working perfect one second, the the next time I went to turn it ... WTF? I use it to DX so turning the dial is an absolute must. Right now, it's a knuckle buster.

KG4CGC
03-01-2010, 05:39 AM
So, I've worked the bearing loose with some sewing oil. Still kind of stiff but not impossible. The flywheel isn't going back on, there's no point. Restrung everything nicely.

The meter lights were 15VAC. I used 4 LEDs out of an LED floodlight that failed due to other parts to make a rectifier and connected 4 ultra-white LEDs to it. One for each meter and I placed 2 on the tuning slide. It isn't perfect on the slide. I'm not going to break it apart. I think the replacement was the slide with an embedded bulb as one single unit.

And now the pic: I put the little green bulb rubbers back on for the meters.

Well I was worried this would happen.
The rectifier set up is wiping out AM band reception.
Guess I'll have to replace the standard AC lamps that it came with.
The FM section is fine But the AM section was hotter than any I've seen that wasn't an SP600.
I did go back through and shield it. No dice.

On top of spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.
It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door.
It rolled in the garden,
And under a bush,
And then my poor meatball,
Was nothing but mush.
The mush was as tasty
As tasty could be,
And then the next summer,
It grew into a tree.
The tree was all covered,
All covered with moss,
And on it grew meatballs,
And tomato sauce.
So if you eat spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
Hold on to your meatball,
Whenever you sneeze.

There are like two songs that they still play in the "recent oldies" or whatever that I truly hate. That's one of them (and IIRC, it's a Springsteen song).

The other is "Black Water" by the Doobie Bros.

Don't know why those two, but if they never played ever again, the world would be a tad better. I think it has something to do with endless lyrical repetition.

"Blinded by the Light" is a song written and originally recorded by Bruce Springsteen. It is best known for a #1 hit version recorded by Manfred Mann's Earth Band.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blinded_by_the_Light

I'll have to play the Springsteen version and see if it's as repulsive as Manfred Mann's. I generally like most of Springsteen's stuff (so it can't be a "taste" issue, eh?).

Legendary Pink Floyd album "The Wall" has been performed live only 31 times since its release 30 years ago, but Roger Waters has decided to take to dust the performance off -- in a big way.

The Pink Floyd co-founder has set 35 solo tour dates running September through December to play the rock opera in its entirety; the production will be utilizing a lot of the original stage cues, including the building of an actual wall erected between the audience and the band. The set includes mega-hits like "Comfortably Numb" and "Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2."

Joke? It was, as I recall, a pretty decent brew, even if the brewery was in South Orange... or was it in Orange, I forget now?.. NJ

I can only remember three brews that my Dad kept in the house... Rhinegold, Ballentine, and Schaeffer.

It was certainly better than Iron City was... and they took the water for IC out of the Allegheny River. Well, until a few months ago, when they shut down the operation and moved it to Latrobe, the old Rolling Rock brewery. Got to be an improvement...

Old joke about a woman who walked into a bar and ordered a Rhinegold. She drank the beer and and passed out immediately and all the guys in the bar had their way with her. She came in the next day, ordered a Rhinegold, passed out and the same thing happened with all the bar patrons having their way with her. Third day she walks in and orders a Budweiser. The bartender looks at her and asks, "Don't you want your Rhinegold?" She says, "Naa, Rhinegold gives me a real pain in the puss."

So I make a lot of business calls to the UK at a very remarkable rate of $0.02 a minute. Who could complain about that? I called a UK "toll free (800)" number yesterday and I discovered I was being charged $0.2482 a minute. WTF batman?

Upon opening my wallet I found a gift card from last year. Hmm $25.00 more off. Ended up with a kick ass monitor for $130.00 (approx). Beats the heck out of the 17" incher I had. :D :D

Actually the real words are "revved up like a deuce" but to most of us it sounded like "douche".That's what happens when a singer with a South African accent sings "The Boss".

How about "She's got electric boobs, her mom has two, you know I read it in a magazine!"
"Don't let your son go down on me!"
"Hold me clothes up, Tony Danza!"

All mangled Elton John song lyrics.

Answers:

We use Hose-a Swervo ("Gold") or Sousa Gold. Agave only. Tried 1800 - may have to pick more up. A splash of Cointreau rounds it out.

Daily's is the preferred mix, though last evening I found some stuff online I might try.

Yesterday I made 'em differently - instead of adding a sheet-load of ice to the blender beforehand I put straight chilled mix and tequila into the jar and blended, then froze...blended, then froze.

Not quite the same as a frozen drink but not watered down, either.

Two glasses apiece was all we wanted. 'DSG's third glass is full; in the refrigerator for later consumption.

I am going to buy one of these in the near future:

It'll blend and freeze at the same time.

This fishbowl, is closer to what should be used.

The 64 oz brandy snifter is what should be used for giant margaritas. That's what the barkeep says.

Stopped off at the gas station on the way home from work today. In line to pay, there was a cute girl (maybe 16-17?) in front of me who was buying a couple candy bars. The attendant is this guy who's been there forever (maybe the owner?); mid 40's I'd guess, and I'm thinking he might be from Pakistan, or that part of the world, anyway. He basically throws the girl's change on the counter, like he's pissed off. Seemed odd to me since I've always known the dood to be both polite and friendly. As the girl leaves, he's glaring at her, shaking his head.

Must have caught my look -- I'm thinking "she had to have done something." He explains it all to me. "Teenagers in this country have no respect," he says. "I've been in countries all over the world and have never seen disrespectful teenagers like in the U.S." Her infraction? Instead of handing him her money, she tossed it on the counter. He gave me a demonstration of how it should be done, using the bill I handed him. Guess I passed the test.

Don't get me started . I did thank a convenience-store cashier the other day , new on the job , 20ish , for counting my change back . I told her some of us appreciate that , the same ones of us who don't park in the doorway , and always pass through it on the right side . She smiled . Her manager just looked puzzled .
