I just came up with another million dollar idea.

Go with me here.............

You have beer in little mini kegs that you keep in the fridge....

Why not have bourbon, scotch, vodka or what have you in a keg (with a pressurized bladder inside), to dispense your favorite hard beverage chilled into your glass? You don't want it chilled, your choice. No oxygen gets to it, fresh every swill.

You heard it first here.

Then he folded the napkin so that all the pepper was in a line. What's this?

If you play Skyrim and find that your menus have started to lag, check your keys. There's a glitch in the main quest line where if you have a Dwemer museum key in your inventory when you give your stuff to Delphine before going to the Thalmor embassy, when you get your stuff back it will have copied 21000+ times. Dump all your keys and it should be fixed.

An interviewer asked Neil de Grasse Tyson: "What is the most astounding fact you can share with us about the Universe?" I mostly agree with his answer.

Iron is typically the endpoint for a star. Stars start out fusing hydrogen and hydrogen to create helium. As the star ages, if it's large enough, it starts fusing helium and hydrogen into lithium, then helium and helium into beryllium. With the most massive stars, this "progression of fusion" continues. At some point, the star starts to fuse things that result in iron.

Under current theory, an iron-producing star has entered the last seconds of its life. Iron is the upper limit of fusion at stellar energy levels. It is also the immediate harbinger of a star's death. Until the fusions start producing iron, they produce excess energy and project it into the system. In general, when they start fusing iron with other stuff, the fusions require input energy from the environment to succeed. Stars don't have that much energy. Unless they go nova.

In somewhere between a fraction of a second, and a handful of them, an entire star collapses from hundreds of thousands or millions of miles across to simply hundreds or thousands. It largely turns itself inside out. It vomits a big chunk of itself into the surrounding space. In the intense violence of this process are born the elements heavier than iron. The energy produced in that cataclysmic collapse even has enough energy to force iron fusion and produce still heavier elements. Every atom of every element heavier than iron originated in a nova or super nova, somewhere, somewhen.

To me, that is the most astounding fact about the universe. Well, technically, I guess it's the combination of two facts. First, every atom is traceable to some specific hydrogen atom, somewhere, somewhen (this is NdGT's choice). And second, (my choice, combined with first), that it takes two separate, but related processes, both of unimaginable violence, to produce the full panoply of elements in Nature. That even the "normal" power of a star is insufficient to produce the spectrum of the universe. That as powerful an object as a star must "die" catastrophically to complete the process.

Use vectors, one for each boat and then subtract the two vectors and determine the length of the resulting vector to get the distance between the 2 boats.

That method will work provided that your vectors (or lines) form a right triangle. In the example above I don't believe they make a right triangle so you cannot just do a2 + b2 = c2. Since both boats contain a magnitude (speed) and a direction vectors are about the easiest thing to use, either by drawing the vectors to scale with a straightedge and protractor or, by using basic vector arithmetic.

What answer did you get?

I estimate it would probable come out to 25 or 26 but I may be off by a few miles :)

I am a big dummy when it comes to trig. I prefer to bisect that triangle to two right triangles then add the two hyp together. It worked for me on figuring HAAT (height above avg terrain, et. al) for the old first phone exam. If I did not have a calculator, I'd be lost. Polar/rectangle function key is my favorite key.

You can do it that way, by decomposing the single triangular region into two right triangles and then determining the sides.. Matter of fact that is basically what is happening when you do it via vector arithmetic.

Wow, how things have changed!

The most amazing offer of help I ever received was years ago, from a Nicaraguan cargo truck driver after my car plowed over a dead scrawny horse, that had just been clobbered by a bus, in the middle of the highway, a couple of hours drive outside of Managua, Nicaragua. The accident ripped-off the car's oil pan and left a mixture of motor oil and horse blood all over the road. The whole region around the highway was filled with soggy rice pattys and I have never seen so many mosquitos in my life! There were litterally black clouds of swarming mosquitos -- millions and millions of them.

After about fifteen minutes, the sun had set and it had become pitch black outside. I was feeling pretty miserable, sitting inslde the car with about fifty mosquitos to keep me company, when the driver of a small cargo truck stopped to help me out. To get a police report, for insurance purposes, he drove me about ten miles to the nearest town, but the police there couldn't help me because the accident location was in another town's jurisdiction. So, the trucker drove me about twenty miles in the opposite direction, passing the accident site along the way.

But, in the other town's police station, the cops said they couldn't help because they were all too drunk after celebrating a birthday party. Besides, they told me, the accident location was in the middle of terrorist-controlled territory, and as a matter of policy, the police never go there after dark because it is too dangerous. They were willing to help me the next morning.

We both knew if I left the disabled car alongside the highway it would be stripped for parts. So, the trucker offered to tow me to Managua using a long chain that he had. This would have taken over five hours at a safe towing speed! I said that I couldn't put him through all of that trouble, and he thought of another solution: he would tow me to a town along the way where a friend of his had a job guarding cars overnight at a gas station/repair shop.

About forty five minutes later, we arrived in the small town where his friend lived and made arrangements for the car to be babysat. The trucker then drove me to the home of a taxi driver friend. It was midnight when we arrived at the taxi driver's house. The taxi driver was already sleeping, but he woke up and groggily appeared in his doorway. He didn't want to make the three hour round trip to Managua because he had already worked a long day and at his age, his night vision wasn't that good. But, he called his son, who was interested.

So, the ever-benevolent truck driver drove me to the house of the taxi driver's son, where we said our good-byes before getting my ride to the capitol city of Managua. The truck driver had spent almost four hours helping me and had never hinted once about getting paid. He had done everything out of sheer kindness. I offered him $500 USD for all of his help. At first, he refused, but eventually accepted the money. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere (Haiti being the poorest) with an average per capita income of about a dollar a day. So, the cash was probably equal to a few months of his earnings -- I wanted to really thank him for doing something that not many would offer to do.

In December 2001, the wife and I were walking through the tourist area of Acapulco when we passed a family: a dad, a mom with new-born baby, and four kids of various ages. My wife made a remark to the mom that her baby was adorable. "Want to hold him?", she asked as she thrust the baby into my wife's arms. As my wife held the baby, the mom asked, "Do you want to keep him?" We were horrified that the woman wanted to give away her baby to complete strangers.

Then, the truth came out. The baby, who was only a few days old, was the love child of the dad and his mistress. The mistress wasn't capable of caring for the baby and the mom didn't want a constant reminder of her husband's infidelity. Dad kept quiet and smiled the whole time: he was already in the dog house, big time.

Of course, we passed on the bizzare offer. Today, for some strange reason I thought about the baby and wondered how his life is going. He would be almost eleven years old, and in fifth grade.

Question: How the hell would you bring a Mexican baby into the US as a tourista?

XE1/N5AL

Question: How the hell would you bring a Mexican baby into the US as a tourista?

You would have to legally adopt the baby, in Mexico, which isn't always an easy thing to do since a number of relatives on both sides of the child's family get a say in the matter. Mexico isn't known as being a plentiful source of adoption children. You would also have to get the proper authorities involved from the start. Just taking the baby, on the street, and driving around while looking for a solution could have some chilling legal consequences: imagine if the Mexican Gov't accused us of trafficing kids, or if the baby had really been kidnnapped from someone else! The Mexican legal system is based on Napoleonic law: you're guilty until you can prove yourself innocent.

For several years, I volunteered on the Board of Directors of a Mexican children's shelter. Out of the fifty kids at the shelter, only one was adoptable. Some of the kids weren't adoptable because they already had loving parents, who just couldn't care for them due to excessive poverty or substance abuse problems. But, other kids, who had been totally abandoned by both their parents, weren't adoptable either since someone in the kid's extended family wasn't about to give their blessing. Sometimes, foreign tourists would visit the shelter and "fall in love" with a particular abandoned child, only to be saddened when they found out that an adoption would be almost impossible.

I seriously think the lady upstairs is the devil. If I even think too loudly, she complains. Despite the fact that she's a god damn elephant in her boots while she's getting ready for work at 4am. :wall: There's a very awful word for people like her. I'm a very considerate neighbor, no matter what she thinks. The guy below me says he never hears a peep out of me. Argh.

She's a pharmaceutical sales rep -- so even prostitutes look down on her.

I have both a preschool and daycare that has an attached playground right outside my window...no sleep after 8am. Those kids sound like a herd of elephants.

When questioned by uninitiated officials, it is sometimes difficult to explain aspects of our hobby.

Last April, arriving at the Guadalajara airport, I passed through Mexican Customs with a MFJ-1026 Noise Canceling Signal Enhancer burried beneath the soiled underwear in my luggage. The Customs official spotted the device on her x-ray scan monitor and initiated this interrogation:

Mexican Customs Agent (pointing to the x-ray image): Is that some kind of mixer?

Me: No, it's a noise canceling device for my ham radio.

Mexican Customs Agent: So, it's a transmitter?

Me: No, it is used to reduce the noise level on received radio signals.

Mexican Customs Agent: So, it's a mixer?

Me (frustrated and conceding defeat): Yes, it's a mixer!

Mexican Customs Agent: Proceed. Next passenger, please!

The funny thing: she was actually correct! It is a mixer. It didn't occur to me until after I had left the Customs and Immigration area that the MFJ-1026 reduces noise by MIXING the noisy incoming signal with an inverted copy of the noise.

This life is made up of choices. Those choices reflect our character. When we look into the eyes of said reflection that is not a manifested beast we see but rather ourselves let go. How long do we wait before we smash the bloodstained mirror of horrors? Before we realize that each given day is a gift that has been bestowed rather than a right we inherited? The continuation of being chained to this wall of sorrow is something held on only by a thread of our being. Only in severing this thread can we truly understand the consequences. Be they death, insanity, or freedom.

Behind the mask of every person is a canvas of living flesh that is hidden in the abstract. To this many are blind.

Docendo discitur

A phrase many have forgotten.

First let me start by saying, thank you, Jeff. This thread is a great place to let out some steam without making some random ass thread that will get three replies.

Now, be warned, this is a rant.

My sister in-law is a college student that stays with Pilar and I three nights a week. She is a good persona and I do like her. Yes, there is a but. However, she is such a fucking slob as well as inconsiderate.

Example A
First off she leaves her clothing lay everywhere and either I or Pilar have to pick it up. Pilar seems to think this means it is her responsibility to wash it, fuck that. I would wash it if she would at least make an effort to put it in the dirty clothing basket. My suggestion was to simply put it in the guest room where she stays for her to either clean the next time or take home.

Example B
She has her boyfriend over every one of those three days. Every time she makes breakfast, and lunch for them both. Great, however not once has she contributed to the food that Pilar and I buy. Still, I dont have a problem with that alone, big deal, its a few euros a week. What gets irritating is when today Pilar said please do not use the pork, that is for tonight's dinner. OMG you would have thought it was the end of the world. Well then I guess we will starve bleh bleh bleh...Seriously? Now this pisses me off. There is a freezer full of food to choose from and or you could go down the street and god forbid, buy something. As they are getting pissy with one another I simply said..you do realize that said pork was for dinner tonight for all of us, right? Including your boyfriend. End of the conversation. However, she in turn makes something else for lunch and much to my surprise they are off to class, bread all gone, milk all gone, dishes on the table, food still on them, food in the pots and pans drying to the point an SoS pad will be needed. This happens three days a week every week. How hard is it to clean your plates, or at least take them to the damn kitchen? Also, how hard is it to pick up a loaf of bread that cost 1€? Or at least say "hey, we are out of bread and I have to go you class, would you mind picking some up for dinner tonight"?

I try to be patient. I have cleaned the mess. I even make her and her boyfriend dinner for them to scurry off to her room and eat it and then bring the plates out to the damn table at 3am. Pilar gets upset when things like this happen. My suggestion is, leave it there for her to clean when she gets back. If that does not work put it in her room. Either she will get the point or she will freak out. But seriously, time to grow up.

Its not like she is a kid, she is 28 years old. For fucks sake, I am only 25. I look at it this way Pilar is being nice enough to let her sister stay here Mon, wed, fri so that she does not have to drive an hour an a half each way, is it too much to ask that you at the very least clean up after yourself?

The funny thing is that Pilar and her mother are both absolute neat freaks. Cris, not so much.

/rant

Does this make me sound like a dick? Am I asking too much? I dont see why a 28 year old fully grown woman should be either Pilarīs or my responsibility.

It's your (and Pilar's) house, she needs to live by the rules. As a student, maybe it's difficult for her to help pay the food bills, but she should be helping in other ways around the house, like washing dishes after dinner, keeping her room clean, etc. Just don't allow house-guest problems to harm your relationship with Pilar!

Sometimes, it's not a pain to have someone else living in your house. My Mexican nephew lived with us (in the U.S.) for six months. He was an ideal guest and a pleasure to have around the house: kept his room clean, helped with household chores, etc. He attended American high school during his stay. For starters, the school administration put him in a first year Spanish class (mistake!). Within a week, they moved him into a fourth year Spanish class (duh!), where he was the star pupil. My nephew also did very well in his other classes (which were in English). Now, he is back n Mexico with one more year to finish college. He often talks of the fun experience he had living with us.

I have been a student too and I understand that. She does however work, and only goes to school part time. 2 hours a day three days a week. On top of that her car is paid for, and her mother pays the insurance.

Normally, I dont let it get to me. But, I get upset when Pilar thinks it is her responsibility to not only take care of her but wait on her like she is a child. Which she is not.

And the food does not so much bother me so much as the outright disregard of appreciation. I know, I know, they are sisters and I wont get in the middle.
