When one of those fat-ass, under-powered pickups commences to tailgate,

my response is to slow down, then at the next uphill, downshift and accelerate. ;)

Years ago, on a two-lane Wisconsin highway (going 10 over the posted limit),

I'd deal with Mr. Tailgater by easing the right-side wheels onto the gravel shoulder.

The ensuing cloud of dust and stones would make him back off, pronto. :)

"Retreads? Check em before you use em."
If they pass the water test they're OK, but unfortunately the African military still hasn't figured out how to use them.

To get serious for a moment, (?) a short Tingley story. I grew up within sight of the old Tingley estate in Rahway, NJ, now the site of a fairly new development. Up the road barely across the Clark city line was the factory where my father worked which at the time made only rubber footwear. It's nice to be able to walk to work saving wear and tear on the car, except when mum used it to go grocery shopping. As an aside, they had a deep well and a cistern I drew sweet water from, better drinking than the city stuff. Some years later they opened a much larger factory in South Plainfield and dad went with them.

He brought home all the footwear we could ever want, my favorite was the 17" stretch knee boot, easy to get on and off and it had a wrap around slot and knob (he said knob) closure making it ideal keeping my feet dry while shoveling snow. For pretty much everything else was the Tingley Tote, a slip on general purpose overshoe. I refrain from using the common term "rubber" because some dingaling might try to put it on his johnson. Some time later the Totes Isotoner Corporation came out with a line of footwear, umbrellas and cold weather gear and the Tingley overshoe became the "Moccasin". They also made short runs of other rubber products including a baton he carried when called up as an auxiliary policeman, he gave me another just for fun. It was a wicked little thing that replaced the old reliable rubber hose used for suspect interrogation, it only got worse when loaded with lead shot, sort of like a dead blow hammer.

After his retirement they opened a second factory in South Plainfield near the first and a third in Edison, the product line greatly expanded too. Today they make all sorts of rubber products, clothing, footwear, etc. used in retail sales, industry, mining, agriculture, forestry, hazmat and many others. When you wear a Tingley rubber wear it with pride, made in USA, deep in the heart of Jersey as a matter of fact.

Then they have bigger stuff than the NJANG. They have antique F-16s they use to drop 5,000 bunker busters at the range in Warren (no relation to me) Grove and scare everyone in Ocean County. When they're actually using practice bombs they tend to drop them 20 miles off target in Little Egg and start forest fires. When they're not busy doing that they send up a blind pilot to strafe schools in Stafford, at least he's only off by 10 miles and is considerate enough to go up on Saturday.

Then there is the TANG who had Gee, Dubya? Lucky you in Alley Bomba, but if you're one of the few with a carpet, take it far enough from the house they don't bomb YOU.

Out of the mouths of babes. He'd provide some interesting youthful insight here, but since he's smart enough to figure out how stupid Man really is, undoubtedly he'd figure out that "over there" some apes haven't evolved.

While I'm thinking of it, all dogs have a common ancestor, the wolf. This is because Man bred wolves selectively until we had work dogs, then continued until we have today's breeds and wolves are still around. That raises the question; since Man "evolved" from apes and they're still around... who bred Man?

Somebody ask the kid, I'll bet he knows.

Since the ancestors went extinct, Neanderthals with a little help from Homo Erectus, one with a larger brain didn't beat him to it. Anyway, the kid is brilliant, so if he were one of my teachers I wouldn't think back on all the CRAP I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all.

Before the thread there was Stephen Hawking, at long last the thread quoted him saying that very thing.

My main aim in writing my book, A Brief History of Time,

was to tell people about the progress that was being made

in understanding the laws that govern the universe.

I thought that others would share the excitement

and the sense of wonder I had felt if the basic ideas

could be explained in a simple way.

And that means without equations.

...Equations are necessary if you are doing accountancy

but they are the boring part of mathematics.

Most of the interesting ideas can be conveyed by words or pictures.

I have just the thing for you. The problem is, I don't know how to get it past the postal inspectors, the NSA, and Vlad Putin.

Damn the torpedoes and send it anyway. We are 9 degrees short of the freeze point here this morning.

A BlueTooth connected electric toothbrush (http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/25/oral-b-bluetoothbrush-smartseries-7000-hands-on/).

Make that an electric tooth comb and it's a deal.

Me too. Maxwell may not have the moves Ford has, but then he's not a crackhead, either.

There was a guy who used to run the Pike's Peak Hill Climb in a 1000HP semi tractor. Fucker was awesome.

Try that with a 57' trailer!

Find me a 57' trailer and I will. And a 1000HP tractor while you're at it.

Maybe we haven't seen goat boots because those who visit "over there" haven't shown us theirs? I'm not an original thinker, but it never fails that one thought leads to another.

From ScienceNewsline (http://www.sciencenewsline.com/articles/2013120318380055.html):
