Here is a little game I think everyone will enjoy.
You post up to 3 pictures of a part and then everyone guesses what the part was used in.
If the part is unusual enough then we can also guess what it is.
Your prize is the admiration of your fellow Islanders!
I'll start off.
Now obviously this is a variable capacitor but, what did it go in?

Looks more like a chart of tumor areas.
The TV tuner was cool, and I was thinking it might be that. All the TV's I cannibalized back in the day had UHF tuners that were small and all covered up in a tin can... soldered shut too. So I wasn't sure.
Be neat to see it to "scale" like a quarter or something. It's printed so nicely, like a kit or maybe a piece of test equipment. Like the guts of a old school Tektronics scope, designed for serviceability. Belong in my junkbox. ;)
Here's one, just for fun. Bonus for not only what it is, but what it is inside of.

I'm going to SWAG it...
A Heathkit Seneca or Mohawk. The Glyptal treatment looks "military" but most of the variable caps that I've pulled from old milsurp equipment were built a little differently than that one. Could very well be military, though.

Viariable capicitor of course, I don't recognize the "K" logo.
Well the size means it's possibly used in the VHF region? There is another small component on the side that looks like an old school fixed capacitor. And that plate spacing usually means power, but maybe it's built that way for reasons of stability. That side rotor is weird... it would change the range of the big variable some. Trimming it. Neutralization?
Eh, I dunno. :chin:
Wild guess? Output circuit for a transmitter in the +/- 100 Mhz range.
The avatar is Mort Sahl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mort_Sahl). Eh, I'm old.
Morton Lyon "Mort" Sahl (born May 11, 1927) is a Canadian-born American comedian and actor. He is credited with pioneering a style of stand-up comedy that paved the way for Lenny Bruce, Nichols and May, and Dick Gregory. He also occasionally wrote jokes for speeches delivered by President John F. Kennedy.

Well the odd ones may be tough, but that is one weirdo capacitor setup... and I like it, it's very cool.
It's a variant of a CNC manufacturing process.
Yer 4-gang capacitor is from something military or commercial, the aluminium frame with anodising wouldn't be cheap to make.
As for the other, the USSR radio makers used to use that red "nail-varnish" on many things including domestic but not much comes out of there now. It's got to be something from the USA.

So that little knob is a ground connection, or?
And the big knob is variable, or stepped?
I'm no guessing it's something to extend/change an antenna tune(r) situation.
Like an inductor or capacitor decade box.
But I bet I'm wrong. Another wilder guess?
Tuning cavity for one of their Business Band repeaters (guessing they made them).

Since it was designed for mobile use, Johnson designed it so you could move the meter and crystal sockets to whatever side was more comfortable for you. It uses a single 807 in the final , modulated by a pair of 807's. The thing has a ton of audio.

I dunno George, for a second there when you stated only one meter I went into duh mode, completely blank, then like a bolt out of the blue it was obvious to me. Me thinks it was the fact that Johnson used what appears to be a meter housing for the crystal holders, hence identical mountings for both meter and crystal.

My last head to head encounters with him were over a complete and very nice National NC-183MR set (NC-183D with some VLF coverage and in a table top rack with speaker) and then a Racal RA-17 in the same setup with the VLF converter. Long after I bowed out some others kept trying to outbid him and it didn't seem to matter how high the bidding went, Joe just kept throwing money at the items. I guess when you count your money by the millions and really want something, what does it matter.

End all tuner problems via a balanced-balanced tuner. The pic is is an extreme version.
Pics from AG6K/Richard Measures website at http://www.somis.org/
I have most of the pieces for something like that stashed away, waiting 'til I have the right real-estate layout on which to erect an antenna system that's fed with balanced line. Instead of dual inductors, I'm planning to use a big honkin' differential capacitor and relay-switched inductors.

I homebrewed a desk top model of the balanced-balanced tuner at my old QTH for use with a simple short dipole, that's all I had room and trees to support there, fed with 125 ohm twinax. It worked marvelously on all bands for my CW use.
So I got curious and ran some unscientific tests across the whole HF spectrum. The silly thing seemed to be able to not only tune, almost zero SWR, but actually radiate RF quite well on any HF frequency.

The Charlotte hamfest was nice. The bouquet was strong of many medications, one of which, when ingested, produces the prolific odor of gluey, soapy, dog repellent and hair spray. The mobility chairs were abundant in number but not outdone by the presence of portable oxygen tanks. I believe there was one in attendance who stores his clothing in a neighbor's barn. I chose to buck the trend by shaving, showering and using deodorant with a spritz of Aspen. I should have bathed in the Aspen, to be honest. There was even a Mexican looking vendor selling used shoes and bronze jewelry. More computers this year than ever before, even a few old Commodores and one Amiga.
George, I looked in earnest for the 500 of which you seek but alas, it was not there. Many, many of the HQ were available. I saw several TS 570D's, a couple of 940's, an 830, a pair of Icom 7500's, an 8500. The Ten Tec gear was beat all to shit except for one nice looking Jupiter w/AT. 1200$$$ asking price seemed a bit suspicious. The Heathkits were strangely not in abundance like they normally are. A couple of SB220's here or there. No receivers or otherwise to represent the old Heathkit line. Several nice little Hammarlunds for 30 and 35 $$$. Project for someone. A Yaesu FT 101/2 for 150 $$$. Hey! The lights did work! A few FT 7** rigs. CBs, DAK stacks, 11m amps, Ranger RCI 29**, coax, scopes, bins of old surveillance cams, crap tools, good tools, assorted magnifiers and satin statuettes. More crap than I have room to mention.
Martin Jue Jr. was manning the MFJ booth. Ten Tec was there just for show as was Yeasu. HRO and Ham Radio World?Universe(?) was there. What ever radio HRO had, Ham Radio W/U was 25 $$$ cheaper. Wire Man, the whacker vest supplier with embroidery machine on hand, Girl Scout cookies in a roving wagon being pulled by overweight Girl Scouts. Sorry. A little cruel. I want to give props to the people from Debco Electronics aka debco.com. They had a whole row for their little parts, close to 180 feet total in table lentgh. They are a little Mom and Pop that sells more than electronic pieces. Look them up. I got 10 crystal diodes for 50 cents each, several multipacks of caps, resistors and transistors for 1 dolla each. Two packs of jumbo LED's for a dolla a pair each (elusive blue), dolla pots, ferrite doughnuts, all in all, 60 dollars worth of pieces parts for 16 $$$. I could have spent all day there thinking about parts I MIGHT need! Not to mention connectors, adapters RF and audio, sockets ... the list would go on and on ... meters. Debco is Tom K8CLA and Deb N8BVI. Need parts, CHECK THEM OUT FIRST.
I did not partake of any of the food offerings. Standard fare, whooptie do, right? But being so close to the heart of livermush country, by 10am the very nice facilities were under siege all manner of sounds and odors. I know, bathrooms tend to stink, it is the Law of Nature. However, the cacophonous chorus of the mensroom combined with added echo and an over taxed ventilation system gives reason to redefine the meaning of certain terms related to battle field conflagrations and being on the front lines of attack! I only wanted to pee! Really! After I walked in there though, suddenly, the rules of Mensrooms Etiquette suddenly did not apply! I just wanted to relieve my bladder and get out. Sorry, guy standing beside me at the urinal. I know there is supposed to be one empty urinal space between us at all times but I was not going to wait for you to clear out and risk fighting over the space left available. In case you're wondering, yes. Yes I did wash my hands as I tried to breathe through my mouth using my teeth as a filter against the onslaught of the awesome power that is Olympic Hamfest Powerdumping. I knew I was up against the Best of the Best but I tell you no lie when I say that I had no idea what was in store upon my entry into that Special Portal of Hell. I may have only spent 60 seconds in there, 75 tops but it seemed like and unending, tortuous eternity.

Too quick, I thought this one would take a while. Old regens and TRFs are easy enough to recognize as what they are, but I thought it would take longer for manufacturer and model number.

Military radio, fairly common a few years back at a lot of 'fests, seldom seen these days.
I'm thinking early to mid 30's and I don't think that set was made by Collins.
ETA: Hallicrafters HT-14.
Here's one for you folks. Look at the receiver pictured below.
Now...is there such a thing as an RME 6950?

 Well that is the civilian make & model and since that info is out now, it's just too easy to cross reference as a military BC-669.
I've been told there was a RME 6950 but I always wondered if there was some confusion with the RME 4350??? I've owned a 6900 and wasn't too thrilled with it's performance, traded it off for some other treasure. I was sure that I was doing something wrong on that 6900 and enlisted the aid of a regional RME expert. He went through my set and declared it to be "spot on". I have no idea how the RME 6900 has such a large following of enthusiasts, I was not impressed. It is an attractive boat anchor rcvr and perhaps that is what endears it to many.

That I know of, there is one (count it) '6950 in existence. A prototype. Sitting about 5 miles from me. The bandswitch wiring hadn't been completed when my friend Steve got hold of the thing, and he's had to fabricate a couple more pieces besides.
If I can get pictures of the set I'll post them.

Very interesting indeed, only one unfinished prototype, can we say eBay millions. I guess that's every collectors dream, to own the one and only of any type gear.
This months Electric Radio has a pic of the factory prototype 75A-4, which turns out to be a standard 75A-2 mounted in an open desk top rack with another chassis holding all the new parts mounted above it. That makes perfect sense for prototyping, since things can be changed quickly and easily. It looks weird but electrically it's a standard 75A-4.
Did any paperwork/manual come with that prototype RME 6950? It sure would be interesting to compare the schematic and specs with the standard 6900 and see what was changed.
