If you'd been here in TN you'd know why. The weather was lousy! Windy, raining with lots of lightning and thunder. I was amazed they got the race completed.

Saturday was beautiful, Sunday was the pits.

Yeah, that was the spin DW put on it. I think the problem goes deeper than that.

You don't have to "spin" miserable weather. I don't think I would have made the drive to Bristol on that day, even if I had free tickets in hand.

All race track attendance is down, a lot of people just can't afford the ticket price any longer. Even our local short track attendance is down and a lot of the racers no longer show up every weekend.

NASCAR and the track owners aren't immune to economic woes, but since both are into black ink territory just on the TV rights sales, before the season even starts, they're OK. Those TV rights are the key to NASCAR's money and surprisingly the junk sales. The sales of those hats, jackets, model cars, pictures, etc. is huge money for them.

The truck racing series was created for TV only, ticket sales were never in the equation.

For the Bristol race, it was a combination of both factors. NASCAR won't be broke any time soon George. But some of the race teams are barely hanging on now, sponsor money is a bit thin these days.

Oh yeah. Many of the teams are not showing up now at every NASCAR race. Some are only able to pull togather 1, 2 or 3 race sponsor deals at a time, the names cahnge on those cars so often it's very confusing now.

It's still a good deal for sponsors, each car in every race is guaranteed so many air time seconds that show the main sponsor name. Compared to the network price for the same exposure time in a produced commercial, it's cheap. Not even factoring in that NASCAR fans are the most sponsor product loyal bunch in the world. They'll actually drink a certain brand of beer because that beer name is on a car they like.  Viagra or Cialis depends on which is sponsoring who!

Affectionately called the "boner mobiles" here in the South!

Mine is the Chinese clone, known as the Type 102E. While it looks somewhat different than the AN/GRC-9 physically, it is a dead on clone electrically. When I got it I took one look at the schematic and immediately said "I know this radio? :chin: ". So I sent out a few emails and it was confirmed.

The 102E sets have been the subject of much conjecture since they were dumped on eBay by a Chinese gent in Canada. Inside they appear to be of North American manufacture and only the Chinese markings on the front panels give a clue to their intended country of use. Just like the GRC-9, it'll load the proverbial "wet string" for an antenna.

I find it a little hard to believe that the Chinese marked components inside their own radios in standard English and then marked the front panels in Chinese.

My friend Mark (high-school buddy) dragged what I believe to be one of those into class one day and we all got to poke out fingers into it...the "radio kids", that is. I can't recall if I've ever seen another, but then again our 'fests are stocked with Beanie Babies and you kid's old train sets rather than (gasp!) radio gear.

I used to get my panties in a wad over all the non ham junk at hamfests. Last year at the Elijay,GA 'fest there was a local craft guy setup with some very well made and unusual bird houses. So I ended up brining home several bird houses, got a sweet discount for the multiple purchase, since nothing else peaked my interest.

I was a real HERO when I got home from that 'fest! The wife loved them! Hearing cheers instead of jeers from her was a treat. ;)

Challenge accepted George. You think I'm gonna say it's a Hammarlund SP-210LX, BUT that is technically incorrect.

Since it's wearing Dakaware knobs instead of chicken head knobs and has the metal plate behind the center knob below the meter, it's a BC-779A.

Or is it an SP-200 R-179?

George, I couldn't remember a single distinguishing factor which would show in your pic that would make it possible to pick accurately.

So I went on a reference tour of the web and still can't find an easily verifiable way to tell the difference in the sets I mentioned by your pic?

So since the plain old SP-200, military R-179, is most likely the more plentiful and common, I'll go with that pick.

During a W.W.II under a 1942 military contract, Howard manufactured the BC-779 version of the Super Pro SP-200 series for Hammarlund. The "made for Hammarlund by Howard" wording suggests that Hammarlund subcontracted manufacturing to keep up with the high wartime demand. From photos, it appears that the Howard built Super Pro's are all in military gray, while some Hammarlund-built models were in the civilian black crackle finish, with a military name tag added.

You can tweak some capacitors by cutting a slit... done with a blast of abrasive liquid or sometimes a laser.
But as far as a specific piece of equipment, I dunno.

Very good! Moowee Bwayno!
That's all I was looking for. That is a cap that sits in my Fluke 87III. To the naked eye it looks like a crack but the photo reveals a purposeful cut.

Was gonna guess what Dave said, but I've never heard of this being done in a piece of production gear. Izzn't that why they have precision (and even trimmer) caps? Fluke is highly regarded, so I learned something. :agree:

Are those horizontal lines reminiscent of early Collins gear or was it an afterthought by the builder?

Usually more stable, and cheaper than a trimmer.

When have you ever built a circuit (or program) that didn't need a little tweaking to make it work? :neener:

Enough of this BS, I can't stand it any longer!

It's a Hammarlund 4-20 xmitter.

A good piece and if you're as lucky as I, you might even own the companion 4-11 modulator. :dance

That's exactly what K4UXK/Clyde of Columbia,TN says.

Which explains why his temporary clip leaded together HB AM xmitter operated this way for years. Single 833A modulated by a pair.

Just some old guy enjoying his book in Cancun. I dug how he used the umbrella stand to hold his cane. Picture taken whilst sitting at the outdoor bar (uh, but before the bar opened).

Weird tho - it displays a little fuzzy here on da Isle. Hmmm.

Actually George, I'm amazed that you've never seen one before.

Weird but excellent receiver. Uses a 7788 first RF amp, which was designed for VHF/UHF and has about 60db gain at 14mhz, which goes completely opposite to good rcvr design theory, which pegs max 1st RF amp gain at about 10db or else the noise floor goes to hell. MacKay also used the ubber high gain 6688 as a mixer, again opposite good rcvr design theory.

The only reasonable explanation I've heard of the 3010C design is that it was intended to be used on a marine mobile whip antenna and since much of marine comms were VLF back then, it kind of makes sense.

Inside looks a bit like a Racal RA-17 but it's only an illusion, completely different design. Interesting note on the 2 Collins filters, if you try to put one of the Dave Curry filters in place of the original Collins filter, the rcvr goes almost dead in that filter position??? Turns out the originals are high impedance input and low impedance output, the Curry filters are low impedance on both sides. I dunno why, but in a Collins radio the Curry filters work FB, better than the originals! :think

I don't think I've ever heard of or seen a MacKay 3030 or 3031???

Now I have seen a bunch of the Cubic 3030 rcvrs.

The antique MacKay 128 VLF regen rcvr and the tube type 3010 are the only MacKay rcvrs that I'm familiar with in the least.
