I've read that it's quite good, but I've never seen it actually do anything but a scan.

Get a copy of Malwarebytes Free Edition for the trojans, spyware, and malware. Scan weekly.

On another note, AusLogics has a new version of their disk defragmenter out ... real spiffy, and it will move frequently accessed system files to the start of the drive (dunno personally about the value of doing this ...), plus it will analyze drives for fragmentation, several at a time.

They also have a new registry cleaning and error correcting tool out. Both are free (for now)!

Thanks Luke. My 60 day free Norton is up next week. I'm thinking about Avast, Malwarebytes, & Spybot for security. Any suggestions?

The auslogics defrag takes 1/50 the time the windows defrag takes, amazing.

Dump the Norton before the deadline lest ye be saddled with nuisanceware.

YES, thanks for the reminder, also, can I dump it whole or are there pieces that must be dumped in correct sequence?

update: looks like there is only "Norton Internet Security" in the programs listing, I don't see anything under Symantec.

That sounds solid! AVG just released their version 9, and it looked pretty good on a 2.8 GHz machine I just worked on ... not quite the resource hog that version 8 seemed to be. I use Avast on my machines that still run Windows.

It is a good idea to remove Norton before the subscription runs out to avoid the nag screens.

And, may as well leave MS Defender on there. One day, it may actually catch something! :D

Yes, while there are several good free antivirus programs, but it always amazes me how people can invest so much time and money in their computer systems, put their most sensitive information on the hard drive(s), tweak them for optimum performance and then ask what is the best FREE antivirus program!

Geez! Open up your wallet and let some of the moths out for cryin' out loud! Personally I use Trend Microsystems: http://us.trendmicro.com/us/home/

Technically, no. But I doubt they'll be there to arrest you for it.

Actually, their license is good for your entire household ... no limit on the number of machines!

Just use the same license number, Bill, it's legit.

That's why I use Avast instead of AVG - both are great, but AVG's free license is only for one machine.
