I'd look into a NanoVA or similar low-cost signal source. An amplitude/frequency stable unit is going to be very helpful in troubleshooting things.

In the old days the clerk/cashier would "count back" your change. They would start with what was tendered then count back up to the amount you gave...

I think this sort of detail is what makes it fiction. It also makes memorable. they had to go to no effort at all to get you to talk about it! :)
