View Full Version : Anyone TIVO
any Tivo gurus out there? It is linux and I know nuttin about the 'quin
That would be me.
What do you wanna know?
I have two DIrecTV TiVos (not in use) and also a series 3 HD (in use with two CableCARDs)
WI have question that are best NOT posted on the ivo yahoo groups....
Such as.... if it is open source, how does the tivo box know it is subscribed to the service?
Not that I want to cheat tivo out of $6.95/mo, I want to play with a third box and since this third box is going to be in the motorhome, I really do not want to hassle with the phoneline, network access, it is going to be MOBILE.
TiVo makes a phone call or network connection to the TiVo service periodically to verify among other things your subscription status.
Not all of TiVo is open source. There's a lot of proprietary stuff in there. That's one of the reasons that Stallman wants free software authors to adopt GPL v3.
There are hacks to steal service, but of course I've never done them.
If you're going to go without a network connection or phone line, how are you going to get guide data? All TiVos except the DirecTV units need the phone call/network to get guide data.
You don't need to stay connected to the line. You only need to make a call once per week or so.
well, thats just it, I miss my tivo when camping. I have directv, perhaps I will find a directv version of the tivo box.
While camping, I never have phone other than cell, and I usually have internet access. I guess that I can network the tivo box too.
Just got grins, I looked at the settings in my tivo box and discovered that I had no internet access. I did a quick ping and found no host, pulled the tivo box out of its hole and discovered that the POS USB to Ethernet adapter broke AGAIN. It is a Linksys with a little flip door that is supposed to hold the RJ45 against the contacts. This time, I reassembled and taped everything down. I hate those adapters, I had HIGH HOPES for Linksys when Cisco bought them out, the opposite has been true.
Well, at lease my tivo boxes talk to each other now.
have you ever used yahoo to set up your tivo box?
If you go to yahoo TV, you are supposed to be able to set up to record a program to your tivo box. I have never made this work. I gave it the media key, it sees the IP address as well as the netname, but no record.
I have two methods of scheduling online.
One I used to use with my Sony SAT-T60 was with TiVoWeb, which was a web GUI for TiVo. You installed it on the TiVo itself. I had a really nice setup where I would do an SSH tunnel to my firewall then go to the TiVo box.
The other is TiVo Central online. That one is accessed from their website. I am stuck with that for a while until I get brave enough to hack my Series 3 HD. The reason I haven't hacked it yet is because you have to re-chip the TiVo when you do, and that pretty much voids all of your warranty, not to mention there's the risk of bricking your TiVo.
If you want a DirecTV TiVo, I have a couple of them sitting in my basement. One I know for sure works. It even has a TurboNet card. If you're seriously interested, make me an offer. It's a Sony SAT-T60. The nice thing about the DirecTV TiVos is that they don't have to make a daily call. They'll complain once every 14 days but they'll be fine. They also get the guide data from the satellites.
Or you could get Murdoch's new NDS DVR's which don't run TiVo software (but are similar), but I don't think they have to be tied to the phone.

Oh, heck no. The point of camping is that you don't have to DRIVE to the fishing hole. You should see some of the Texas rigs here. Class A coaches worth several hundred grand, usually towing an SUV (so you can drive into town and get a good steak when the fishing is bad). And they all have satellite dishes.
"Roughing it" means no sewer connection.

no! this is camping...
yep, 36 foot Class A, 50A 240V electrical system, 5.5kw Onan genset, side-by-side fridge, convection microwave, 8.1L Workhorse chassis, washer and dryer, DirecTV, pull the Envoy. it is a 4x4 with a manual lock/unlock xfer case so I can tow it flat.
Roughing it, is no sewer hookup, or 30A electrical service. Both can be over come, the sewer problem can be worked around with a large tank on wheels, and I can fire up the genset and run both AC when it is 105 in the shade. Roughing it is when there is no WiFi access!
I installed a dedicated workstation, 15 inch LCD monitor, and a WiFi antenna. When I am home, it joins the home domain, on the road, I wait until I find a campground hotspot.... yes, too cheap to buy a Sprint account. If I ever go full time, I'll add an autotracking dish and use HughesNet.
getting there.

Are you from Texas?
We're doing a cabin in the woods this year. No laptop, but I'll have the IC-7000 along; longwire and a 20 meter dipole in the trees. More important, our 13 year old dog gets to be real comfy. Priorities, ya know...

Texas? isn't that North Mexico??
Just kidding, JUST KIDDING!
No, not from Tejas, I've been there, I camped there :)
I know that the telcom world revolves around Richardson.
Oh, the picture of the FT817 is the OLD station, the new station is an IC-703. I like the remote head when backpacking the radio.
I once asked my dad why he chose the Navy instead of the Marines like his brother/my uncle, he said that he does not like sleeping on the ground. We always did the camper thing, tent camper and travel trailer. My wife is the one that insisted on a motorhome :D
How about these dogs, think they are comfy?? Of this kennel, the sheltie is the only one still with us, and this was in the old Airstream.

see, i think "roughing it" means "no room service." then again, i'm one of those funny folks who thinks we keep the outdoors outside for a reason . . .

Not bad.
Great deal if you want a standalone TiVo.

Seems like the campgrounds around here are always full of Class A's and they all have Texas plates on them. God lives in Texas, ya know... but he vacations in Colorado. Or so the saying goes. Anyway, that's way too much for me -- too big and expensive for the week or two a year we manage to get out. We usually spend most of the time in FS campgrounds where the amenities are sparse.
The dogs sure look happy, though!

Yes, but you need to look at the tax laws. There are many MH owners that register the RV in a tax free or a low tax state so you will find full timers with license plates for states where they may visit yearly.
I ran into a ham while in TN this past week, he had 1land plates on his car and SD registration. I asked about SD and he said he has not been there in 10 years. I guess that SD has lower RV/Auto taxes.
