I've got one major headache with Quicktime.

Have a few programs that use Quicktime to operate - mostly video editing related.

QT came out with 7.2 - everything related to QT refused to operate.

Removed QT, and all registry entries I could find - re-installed, and still no workie.

QT will work - but nothing else.

Any ideas?

confusing Post there Tony
So Quicktime runs but programs that have a dependency on Quicktime runtimes aren't working? Did you reboot after install some registry entries don't get populated till after a reboot. That is a less common problem these days but this was written by the Apple folks so who knows...
Did you get message from the failing programs? did you check the error logs in windows might have some details..
Occasionally I find that adding a path entry to the libraries location can solve a bunch of issue, provided the libraries aren't located on the system path...
Sometimes a path entry doesn't get populated till after a reboot...

Yes, cold re-boot at that. I noted that the QT Folks noted 7.2 resolved some nagging "bugs" - I got new for them, NOT

Tried this: http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/evn/winxp_qt.html

No help!

Did you change versions during this process...
Occasionally some programs have dependencies on old versions this is a pretty rare condition in most recent software but sometime...

I did ask before but you did check the logs right... run compmgmt.msc on XP

Did any of the failing programs present you any meaningful messages like "qtxxnxn.dll missing"
That way you could search the system and program files directories to see if the files are not installed or found...

Sorry I didn't reply on the logs - no I didn't, and yes - I will! :D

Will report on what I find if I don't throw the thing out first.

Sequence of installations can make a difference where one program has a dependency on another.

The sequence that comes to mind to me would be install QT first and then the others afterwards. But don't jump onto this possibility till after you examined the previous suggestions I posted earlier.

Also when you say a program doesn't work do you mean it doesn't start or it starts with an error. Because if you don't see anything then you need to look in taskman.exe (task manager) to see if the program even tried to start. It could very well be that the shortcut isn't functional. I usually start a program that is giving me trouble by either explorer in file manager mode or the NT command line (cmd.exe)

Both start with an error. Splash screen comes up, then Bill Gates Jr, reports an error.

One is Sonicfire Pro 4.0. I wrote their Tech unit with details. The other is TMPENG. I wrote them last month and they had no answers. TMPENG allows for output of QT, AVI, and others. Only QT crashes when trying to output.

Will look at other suggestions. Thanks Mucho!

Re-Installed QT - now the computer locks up right after the P splash screen.

Anyone ever heard of the James River?

Well, if the piece pf shit brand new computer don't boot-up tomorrow, its a boat anchor as soon as I can make it to the river. :x

Before you throw the machine out let me ask this question did this software ever work before it failed or is this the first install and that is not working?

I did mention the version incompatibility earlier do you recall the version that it was before?

Perhaps you have a copy of the older installation or could download it?

You will have to clean up the environment, files, registry entries, etc before reinstalling the older version(s)

7.15

If I can't restore to a previous good day using XP Restore, I'm hoing to format the drive and re-load all the software.

Well, after 5 attempts at booting into safe mode (Luke suggested in a PM) - bada-bing, it finally did.

Running CHKDSK /R - its down to free space (5of5). So far, no reports of tangled files. I am very surprised.

Did find a driver that should not have been loading and kilt it dead. Strangely enough, it was an audio driver. As I am using a sound card vs on-board audio, I have kilt that in the Bios.

Will go through the startup to see if anything else trying to weasel itself in, and will kill it too.

Still don't have a lot of faith in a full recovery - when things get this bad in XP, its usually format time.

We shall see - News at Noon

Well to be honest what you seem to be reporting is a machine that has a great number of issue. I have rarely run across software that can't be made to run on a clean configuration machine. I have seen enough machines that have so many failed installs and removes that they become unworkable.
Who knows if it had been possible to have actually seen the machine I might have been able to ascertain that all you had to do was this, that, and this. But without seeing the logs and the messages I can't say in absolute terms.

It might very well be time to do a new clean install if you do then follow an orderly sequence. Do the initial base install then do all the SP's and patches, then do the software installs that wish to have on the machine. I usually do another step that is make an image file of the base but that is a whole 'nuther' topic and surprisingly it quickly becomes a few pages on how to approach imaging...

All came back OK on the CHKDSK

I tend to agree with you - problems like this could portend even bigger problems later. Better to get 'er done now before I start any new video projects - which i have 2 on the burner.

What I will do is order another identical drive, pull the C drive and stick it in the machine to copy data files off of. Once its all over will format the old C drive and use it for data.

Still waiting for SonicFire to get back with me - they have been excellent on Tech Support.

Thanks Mucho!

Luke is gonna run for the hills when he reads this

Sounds like a plan I am sure you will find a clean windows install a welcome relief :)

Tech Guy said

Replace Video Drivers Nvidia supposedly have conflicts - so I kilt them
Replace Soundblaster Files - so I kilt them
Replace Quicktime install - so I kilt it

Replaced each, booting after each install

CRASHED THE PROGRAM just like it did after QT updated.
Windoze says its a Quicktime problem, install newest file (it was)

So I kilt myself
