Actually I am not offering any just figured I might post a few links I found and ask for ideas.

I was winding one today no problems with a single layer toroid but this one required another layer with a twisted pair, yuck!
Here I placed three smt ic's with no issues, a few smt capacitors, then about 50 standard caps and resistors. No problem with that but I got around to adding that second layer two the toroid, err no go. I undid and managed not to ruin the first layer. I suppose I can work it when I am fresh but I was in no mood after all the soldering. Yeah got the magnifier, needed that to read the values on the standard caps and even those smaller resisters, oh well.

Got any fun horror stories or good sound advice?

This second ones title cracks me up "How to wind toroids without pain" yeah sure...

I used to be afraid of toroids but I got it down pat now.

The bifilar transformer windings are a real bitch.

What you have to do is gently twist them together (the bifilar one) then wind it over. Count as you go.

Yeah your probably right I most lost my tolerance from fatigue. Like I said the single layer was a no brainer but making a transformer out of a toroid is not my idea of fun. I think I will look into substituting coil forms as a alternative maybe the slug tuned variety?
Not sure exactly which toroid this was looks like an ft-37 size wouldn't mind t-50-2 as much... oh well pick it tomorrow when I am fresh just wouldn't have minded it being done already

PS: Make that a T-30 with one layer and a bifilar layer overlaid... yuck. Well either way I finished winding it at 6:00 AM when I wasn't fatigued from all the soldering

It's not my preferred pasttime winding toroids but if you tape up the first winding with thin tape (polyester tape is used by manufacturers) it'll be much easier. Household tape may be OK but NOT PVC insulating tape.

Bifilar, yes , twist slightly and have a piece of tape handy in case the phone rings. Winding 100 turns here in the lab at work I must have run over the wire with my chair a few times but as it wasn't high voltage I just ignored the defects.
