View Full Version : Fruit vs Candy

We have a number of fruit trees including a plum tree outside the front of the house. This tree is a semi-wild plum, reputedly introduced by the Romans when they invaded Britain. The plums are small but the sweetest I have ever tasted, more than the variety "Victoria" which we also grow.
Some of the local kids throw sticks into the wild plum to knock the fruit off. This is something children have done for centuries but these days, instead of eating the fruit, it's left to rot on the ground and the kids go down to the local Co-op and spend their pocket money on candies/sweets.
Is this a common phenomenon like buying perfect supermarket apples from hundreds of miles away when you can eat your own, slightly blemished, apples fresh-picked off the tree?

Yeah. Everything has to look perfect. No one knows what fruit used to look like back in the day.
We have a Golden Delicious in the backyard but I don't know enough about it to know when to spray for fungus and scale. It really produced this year but everything is covered with black spots. The squirrels didn't seem to have a problem with them even though they preferred store bought peanuts. I suppose I could make a big batch of wine yeah?
As far as candy goes, dehydrated fruit paste, home made, is sweeter and tastier.

Many of our apples have bad spots this year, I didn't spray anything and it's been horribly wet (again). The only clean variety is "Katy", an early cropper from Sweden.
I don't worry about a few small scabs but I suppose many supermarket shoppers wouldn't touch them.

Don't understand "candy" very well anymore...

Since I started football conditioning and now running and lifting weights before and after school I haven't had any candy for at least a month. Had a soda during my Eagle project, but that was the first one I'd had in a looong time. Fruit and other snacks are just as tasty, AND they often have more calories and higher nutritional value.

I'm gaining weight as it is just working out, don't want to have to get more of me moving than I have to! Especially when explosive power is what I need...

You should take some of that fruit and dry it.
Dried fruit is jsut as good as candy in taste and certianly a lot better for you.

Living here in the people's republic of Kalifornia (Earthquake country) I always have a month's food and water on hand. Except I ate all dried fruit in my bugout bag and the store of storable food I have. :)
Really good stuff.

I also prefer dried fruit over candy, dehydrated apples, apricots, papaya, banana chips etc. Add some sunflower seeds and assorted nuts and you have trail mix. You can make trail mix cheaper than you can buy it, and it is a healthy snack.

Shit, I don't spray nothing on the apples that grow on the trees by the pond. The trees have been here longer than I have and as far as I can remember nobody has done anything with them. That being said, they produce tasty apples. They are not very big but they are good. I haven't a clue as to what type they are.

Size matters not when it comes to fruit,
or veggies.

+1

The best stuff is free range. Meat, veggies, or fruit, natural is better!
