It's about the bloodiest tune, to say nothing of national anthem, I've ever heard of. But, given the context of the times, perhaps not all that surprising. Of course, the third stanza of ours is a bit bloody too.

its not the bloodiness of it vinnie.
it is the children of the fatherland unite
the blood of the impure will run through the furrows of the fields.

sounds alot like hitlers words.
and alot like the word of the KKK and the skinheads.
what makes them different?
oh wait i forgot. they tend to surrender the second things get difficult.

What makes them different is the context in which this was written. It was written and interpreted as a rallying call to the citizens of France to stand up to and fight those who were at the time invading their nation. The words make that abundantly clear. It was not written to summon unprovoked attacks, genocide , or prejudice as were Hitler's words.

oh wait i forgot. they tend to surrender the second things get difficult

Typical neocon drivel. You'll make Rush proud. The people over there stood up to brutality far beyond what most Americans have ever seen or imagined.

They were being invaded by armies from neighboring regions including Austria and Prussia.

rush is an a$$hole.

That I can agree with

the french are a$$holes

I don't know. I've met several French people and I didn't think the were a$$holes. My girl friend is French and I don't consider her to be an a$$hole. I do consider people who generalize and call an entire race or nationality "a$$holes" to be a$$holes. So perhaps that proud title should go forth unto thee accordingly ?

You found the word "fatherland" used in the anthem to be reminiscent of Hitler's use of the word. The only problem was that Hitler wasn't born yet when the French anthem was written. That means the word "fatherland" predates Hitler and the Nazi's. The word "fatherland" (as interpreted) was commonly used to describe ones loyalty to their nation...the land of their fathers. It was used by dozens of world cultures for centuries and in reality has absolutely nothing to do with the Nazi's.

It is even debatable whether the interpreted German word used by Hitler was really "fatherland" at all. Some argue the correct translation is "homeland". Could it be... America is emulating the Nazi's ? I mean we have a "homeland security" department and we refer to our country as "our homeland".

well i guess i am a neocon this week.
i guess its better than being called a socialist.

That's a matter of opinion. History is not the forte' of most Americans.

Verdun only proves the stupidity of both Germans and French of the time period.

Once you visited the churches in France like i do for years and see the plaques with names of villagers killed in both wars, you get more realistic.

Before someone judges the merit or courage of the French soldiers, inform yourself a bit better about their history... :snicker:

Maybe you need to sit back and take time out and think hard at what you are saying..

My Great Grand Parents were French Jews and migrated to Australia in 1850...I have a very strong heritage going back many centuries and I am proud of my family background and take objection to ignorant assholes who feel that it is allright to put down other countries not withstanding that you probably don't have any better heritage yourself..

Who will be your flavor tomorrow? Glass houses mate..

i am sorry i offended you
the comment was in bad taste.
i have already apologized to one other in a pm.
i should not have generalized in that manner and that is also why i stopped posting on this thread. i was wrong and am man enough to admit it.
i was basing my opinion on the few french peopel i had met over the years and about 90% of them were arrogant and rude. i should know better than to group everyone together based on a small sample. my great grandmother was a german jew who emigrated with her two young children to the US in 1936.
again i apologize to anyone i might have offended with the comment about the french.
