View Full Version : NOTICE: Important Updates concerning the move posted HERE!

06-10-2009, 07:41 PM
This Saturday, we are going to move the forum and the web page to a new server. Jeff, W4GPL, has graciously offered us a spot on one of his servers.
The schedule for this move is as follows (all times EDST):
8:00 ... Turn off the HamIsland forum
8:15 ... FTP Files to the new server
8:30 ... Turn the forum back on, BUT
The domain name will probably not start working until 12:00 or later. The DNS TTL's will probably require 4 hours or so to expire. Certainly by 9:00, if you try the forum and get the message that the site is down, the domain name is still pointing to the old location. You will know the DNS changes have settled in when you get the "live" forum.
A few other changes will occur at the same time, mainly administrative changes. KR4UQ and KD4ZOT will no longer be listed as administrators. As many of you already know, Tony, KR4UQ, has provided us the server space and bandwidth for about a year now, if not a little longer. Tony is planning his long deserved retirement to happen at any time, so hence the move. Many thanks to Tony for having us for so long! Jim, KD4ZOT, was the IT guy who tended to the server. He was also very helpful for us over that period, and my thanks to him as well for answering all my stupid questions in the dozens of emails I sent him, especially when I managed to lock myself out of the server a few times ...
We've been lucky with these sorts of things in the past, and hope this goes well. Please be patient while we work through the move.
Thanks for hanging your hat here at the Island!
Best 73 from the entire staff!

Though it would likely produce odd results, you could add a second A entry for the new location and then you'd have a round robin. The only problem is 50% of the people would wind up at the wrong place.
Used to use them all the time though when I ran IRC networks. irc.* pointed to every IP of every server :)

Everything is still set to happen tomorrow, but we're pushing
everything back about 2 hours. I am guessing the site will
go down around 9:15 to 9:30 EDST tomorrow. It will come back
on when the DNS servers get their updates of the domain
name changes propagated. Best estimates range from a
couple of hours to 4 or more hours.
You'll know when you hit the new server ... the forum will be
"live". If you get a message that the site is down for maintenance,
you're still being redirected to the old server.

See you guys after the move!
W4GPL

Alrighty. Everything is moved.
What's changed?
- New forum hostname - the forums are located at 'forums.hamisland.net' now, all legacy links will continue to work and there's no plans for that to change. No need to update any bookmarks.
- We upgraded to phpBB 3.0.5. No major changes there, some of the styles may be funky until Paul has a look at them.
- When reimporting the database, I discovered one of the drives on our RAID array had failed. At some point during the week, we'll have to take the server down for a few minutes to swap the drive. I'll make a posting before we do it.
- If you talk to anyone who can't access the server, have them flush their DNS cache -- if they don't know how to do that, have them reboot. :) Though some domain name servers may cache the old entries for 4 hours.
If anyone notices any problems, let us know... but I'm fairly certain everything is in good working order.
ad4mg

Many of you might have to upload your avatar again. Not sure why, but it looks like about half of us lost their avatar.
And, some uploaded images might not have made the transfer to the new server. I think it was a file permissions thing, as I noticed that when I did a full backup via ftp before the move, my ftp client software gave a "forbidden" message when downloading those uploaded images.
Please list any issues you encounter here in this thread so we can sort them out.
And please refrain from posting any large images in this thread. Jeff and I have spent way too many hours in front of the keyboards to have to be scrolling side-side to read about problems with the move.
We should begin seeing more and more members being directed to the new server in the next few hours. The domain name destinations were changed at 09:53 EDT this morning. It may be as late as 14:00 EDT before everyone is back on board.
Thanks,
Luke

People who have uploaded images and avatars in the past may notice they're missing.
This is only temporary. It's advised that you do not try to upload your avatar until again further notice. We should have resolution within a few hours.
What happened? (stop reading here if you're non-technical)
When the files were uploaded to the server, they were created by & owned by the user 'apache' with a file permission of 0660, restricting our ability to download the file(s). Since we do not have root access to the od server, we're unable to rectify this on our own. We are waiting on the people who run the old server to change the ownership of the file(s) so we can download them.
--------------------
Additionally a few users who had extended characters in their usernames, such as W0TKX got fouled up due to a yet unknown text encoding problem. I've done a search and replace where possible to rectify this issue. If you are having problems logging because of this, please contact me directly via e-mail: w4gpl (at) w4gpl.us and I will fix it for you.
Thanks for your patience.

User uploaded avatars, and uploaded images are now here with us on the new server. You will have to refresh your browser to see them ... Ctrl-Shft-R for Firefox users. IE guys, I dunno, I don't use defective software ... :D
I think that takes care of 99% of the issues. A link on the website (not the forum) is pointing to itself, but I'll change that shortly.
Reference the upgrade ... it was only an incremental phpBB upgrade that just showed up yesterday, so Jeff went ahead and installed it. I'll check the phpBB forums later and see what the changes were.
Guys, Jeff put his entire Saturday into this move (which I told him NOT to do ...). He wasn't going to quit until everything was right. Excellent job CGC....but it's 50kB too big to use (Island avatars have a 244KB limit...this is 290+)
thank ya tho!
You need an offsite account like photo bucket. :)

Good job. It seems to work still. But.....
I am experiencing at least 4x the wait to get anything to load after the update. Damn dialup...its all I can afford since satellite out here is north of $70/mo. Why is it everytime something gets 'better', it takes forever to load? Guess its back to the radio..... :wallNothing has changed that would cause the site to load slower.. in fact, most people have reported it's faster.
Go into your board profile and turn off avatars, file attachments, flash video.. that way the only that loads is text & smilies.

You may be re-caching everything. Once its done it should be like before :)
Some of us (like me ...) that had bookmarks that were 2 years old may have to bookmark the site again. My oldest links would take me to the web site, instead of the forum. An easy change to make, as the web site has a link to open the forum in a new window.
Go away for a few days and they move away! Great job guys. Couldn't tell the difference.

My status bar actually shows activity now whereas on the other server it did not. However we are talking 1/10 if a second difference. Im not going to complain about that.

We were bored. Next week, we're going to move QRZ to e-Ham's server, and e-Ham to Fred's server.

Still curious about the encoding problems for the "alt-0216" Ø
I'm using the Unicode set.
Is there another one to use, as just plain zero is not HamSexy.

But I wasn't about to export and reimport the database as it took almost 2 hours the first time around. It was actually easier to search and replace..

I'd offer you space on our servers but then Todd wouldn't visit anymore. 8)

Perhaps that is it. I tried GPL's idea to no avail. I wonder how long this recaching will take?

Have you cleared the cache? You could have a file error or something going as well.
Clearing the cache means you will have to reload everything from everywhere you go, but it may cure the problem.
