I have to lose weight. I have to lose A LOT of weight.

So I put myself on a low carb diet. The recommended daily allowance for carbs is 300g in a 2000 calorie diet. I cut my carbs to less than 50 per day.

Anyone here ever try it? Anyone have any recipes?

I have tried but gave up.. FWIW I dropped from 215 to 147 by switching to a low-fat diet and running 3-4 miles per day. I stayed in shape for several years after that, but now I need to do the same as you and lose a LOT of excess weight. The low carb thing doesn't seem to work for me, but low-fat does. As a precaution, I took in a little fat with vitamin supplements.

I tried the low-fat thing last year, and failed miserably. I didn't realize that starches and sugars (carbs) are stored as fat. So I am trying this. I do feel better already.

Once I slim down, then it's time to quit smoking. I sure as heck ain't going to do both at the same time!

If you are smoking, you are quite a risk-taker! My hat's off to you for your remarkable bravery.

I did the low carb thing a few years ago. Lost 30 pounds doing it. Put half of that back on in the last 3 years though.

Was pretty easy for me to follow. Steak, eggs, salads, cheese etc.

If you have a bread machine, there are a number of low carb bread recipes out there that taste really good, like an expensive loaf of the fancy wheat stuff. Those were a life saver for me.

Oven fried chicken was a big hit in the house. Crush a bag of pork rinds and use them as bread crumbs on the chicken with some spices. Gives it a nice crunch and tasted great.

I only lose weight when I exercise.

Dieting never does it for me, especially low carb diets.

It's not the food, but the food and the behavior need to be modified. I have always bolted my food, therefore it packs on quickly if I don't work out.[/b]

For me bread and pasta were the hardest parts. But now, there are several rather nice low carb breads and pastas out there. I did the diet just before it became all the rage and there were very few low carb products out there.

Check the local markets (a natural foods place may have a better selection) or the internet. There are a number of online vendors for low carb stuff these days. There is even low carb milk!

Making me think about getting back on the plan again. Lord knows I need to shed a spare tire or two (or three).

Getting ready to give it half a try here. Low fat hasn't helped much, but I lost about 20 pounds giving up [most of the] beer about 18 months ago. Need to exercise more too, but that hasn't helped a lot in the past either.

They say it's all calories in and calories out, but I think there's more to it than that.

The low carb diet does have a good deal of calories and fat in it.

The trick is that by keeping the amount of carbs low, your body starts to use your fat supplies as fuel. You need carbs in order to burn protein. By eating a high protein, low carb diet, you force your body into converting stored fat into carbs in order to burn the protein you consume.

It is literally metabolic starvation.

Pass the pork rinds and bleu cheese dip please.

Perhaps you guys should look at this. I've never been a fan. The only way to lose weight is to push away and sit up.

Doc says I should be on a "strict low carb diet."

What does it it do for your energy level?

Thanks. I've heard the rumors and read the horror stories. Cholesterol? They got drugs for that. High BP? Likewise. Grotesquely overweight is a death sentence. I'll take my chances.

How many fat people you see in a nursing home?

I've had no problems. Matter of fact I feel better. You're gonna be hungry, but when you are, EAT! Just eat stuff low in carbs. And yes, you can still find low-fat and low carb stuff. Poultry, fish, cheese, lean beef, veggies, etc.

Some people go through what they call the "low carb flu". About 3-4 days into the plan you feel kinda yucky for a day or so as your body starts to readjust to the lack of carbs being eaten. After that passes, you feel fine.

When I lost wieght low carbing, my BP and colesterol actually went down, despite all the fatty stuff I was eating.

Same thing happened to a guy I work with. Because I did ask him about cholesterol and BP, and he said he never saw an adverse effect.
