Just to add a little to K1OU's link...

I don't know about phone, but in HF CW, some ops consider the very bottom of each band (ie. 7.000-7.010, 14.000-14.010 plus or minus, etc.) to be a "dx window." So they'll get grumpy if you're calling CQ there or having a local QSO. They want those frequencies clear of local CQs so they can hear DX calling CQ.

I imagine it might be similar with phone and the bottom of the phone segments. ??

People actually follow the band plan??

I get a kick out of the PSK and RTTY contests. 40M DX stations have a window that sits in the CW portion of the American plan (7.040). After dark everyone is down there bagging the DX stations and the CW guys go nuts. All kinds of interference, cussing and key downs during that time due to the spill over up and down from the window.

That is the only time I have heard the digital portion of the band sound like an average day on phone.

Yeah, during contests just about every "agreement" gets thrown out the window. :)

And there are SO MANY contests. Many weekends are a mess for non-contesters.

Oh come on now, you still have the WARC bands.

Besides, the contest traffic on contest weekends should shut up the "the hobby is dying" folks.

I heard the local Village Idiot on the "channel 35" repeater the other day discussing "DX Windows". He claimed that the DX Window was there so that when the bands were open, you would have direct paths into the country you are trying to work. It was up to the DX station to open the window and allow you to work him.

The SCARRY PART was that he is an Extra (OK, so he was the object of an FCC investigation a few years back when he was accused of selling novice exams to bypass the code requirement, and OK, he was a tech that used the doctors excuse to get his extra code credit, the ORGINAL 5wpm extra and they never did actually prove that he helped the guy caught trashing the local PD modify his hammy radio after the FCC pulled his ticket because he failed the re-test.)

I always thought the DX Window was the range of frequencies allocated to the Ass Hats who yell, "YOU'RE IN THE DX WINDOW! QSY, LID!!" whenever you transmit on those frequencies.
