A few favorite authors out of the hundreds of books I have read over the years. I noticed a mention of Science Fiction in another thread.

Orson Scott Card... Enders Game. Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide. Stunning.

David Brin... The Uplift Novels. Fantastic, please make a movie!

Larry Niven... Ringworld, The Known Universe. Luis Wu, a favorite character.

William Gibson... Neuromancer, Burning Chrome. Movie please!

Clifford Simak... Project Pope. This is really a wild one.

Alan Dean Foster... Quozel, Humanx Universe. Dig the Thranx ;)

Robert Forward... Rocheworld, Starquake. Excellent science premises.

I dunno. Try Enders Game, see what you think. It has something of a military theme to it. Kids at the "Battle School". If you get hooked, there a number of stories about Ender and the "times" he lived in.

Actually, if you like what you mentioned, you might like Slant or Darwin's Radio by Greg Bear.

FWIW, David Brin wrote The Postman, and it reads better than the movie.

David Brin's Uplift War stories are wild, you have to get into the mindset of a lot of aliens. Fantastic though, very complex characters. This may be why I tolerate weird behavior on 75 meters better than most.

The movie was OK. but it did not do justice to the book. But I liked it. I read 2001 before I saw the move... and Dune... well, not Star Wars...

If you liked The Postman, try The Practice Effect, also by David Brin. It's really different, and a fun read. Sort of a humorous fantasy adventure.
