The quickest and dirtiest way barefoot radio only....
Tune frequency.
Center the vari-caps for Transmitter and Antenna (at 12 o' clock).
Turn roller inductor until highest signal level or highest amount of noise is heard in the receiver.
Adjust vari-caps until noise peaks again.
Key transmitter at 10 watts carrier.
Adjust all knobs until output power is maximum and reflected power is minimum.
Increase transmitter carrier to 50 watts.
Adjust all knobs until output power is maximum and reflected power is minimum.
Key transmitter at full power.
Adjust all knobs until output power is maximum and reflected power is minimum.
Make note of settings for future use and quicker tuning.

Or cut antenna to frequency, ignore the above. :D

That only works until you change frequency. Then you have to cut it again, or solder more on. Becomes a pain :)

I've got one problematic dipole that I've cut at least 3 times, and the dang thing is still too short!

Better yet, borrow a local club's or a hammy pal's MFJ 259 or 269! ;)
I actually have both.
I need to get rid of the 259, but I think I may hold on to it as a backup.

Both?!?! Crikey, I would have guessed a smart young lad like you would have used the 259 and performed the third harmonic calculation to fill in the gaps and saved your $ for other hammy toyz!
