I'm tired of the kalifornia crap and the white zinfandel.
Personally I'm a fan of Shiraz Rose. xyl loves it too.

I never much cared for the California wines either but there are some excellent buys coming from Cal now. Especially the Cabernets. I'm getting Fetzer Cabernet on sale for $5.50/btl. I think a rather good deal for an El Cheapo.
I gotta go with a good left bank Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon varietal, then there is Pinot Noir, Shirah, a nice Rhone, plenty of good whites too. A good Mosel riesling is still a wonderful experience.

It is an inexpensive light red wine that is often "fruity". I like Beaujolais Villages, which in AK runs about $9/bottle.

That's the one. It's not too dry, not too sweet. I drink other red wines, but the Beaujolais Villages is the one I prefer.

Wine is best paired with whatever you are eating with it. A charcoal grilled steak for me is best with a Cabernet Sauvignon, or maybe a good Zinfandel. I like pizza with a Chianti, or Pinot Noir. A moderately spiced roast chicken goes well with a Pinot Noir or Rhone/Shirah.
A good Mosel with sharp cheddar. etc.

MEAD. Prefer mead made with citrus grove honey, but clover is a close second.

Gold Rush Liquor at Old Seward and Dimond carries it. Not sure where else it can be found around town.

One of the finer screw top varieties.
Cisco's are like the scew top LSD with too high of a Strychnine front end.
Lovely bouquet, but reeks havoc on all other systems.
Possibly a nice mouthwash after about 10 packs of chain smoking Red Marlboro's.
When you don't have the time, try a fortified wine.
What's the price?
$0.50 twice.
Now back to our local vineyards.

I wonder if that's how Twister worked. It was a cheaper harder version of Thunderbird and the winos loved it. Those that survived.

Terry, not that you and I would ever do such a thing, well, at least any more....... you ALWAYS unplug the phone cord prior to the festivities starting. If someone picks up the phone to do a 911, they will think they are talking to someone when the line is dead anyway... :twisted:

I have VERY fond memories of my teenage years of dead end dirt roads, teenage girls and some stuff called "Annie Green Springs"... that was the 70's...
My "professional" friends- the ones who drink wine daily in large quantities as more than just a hobby- seem to like "Wild Irish Rose." More bang for the buck!

Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill was quite well liked by the young ladies in the 70's too...... made for, well, interesting times.

The best I've had to date was a 2000 Le Baron De Brane left bank Bordeaux (about 2 months ago). Purchased 5 years ago for $30.

I am not normally much of a wine person. But there is a Amish family in the Central Ohio area that makes some kick ass wine. I don't like a real dry wine, nor do I like a really sweet wine. But then, maybe I have never had a "good" wine.
I do however enjoy a good brandy.
I am going to bottle my latest batch... a cherry wine. It is not over powering cherry, a light cherry. Alcohol content is about 12 to 15 % judging from the hydrometer.
I'm a wine illiterate, all I know is what my taste buds enjoy and that is usually Dom Pérignon 1999. Other than the random sampling of that, my taste buds prefer heavier bodied and flavored distillations like beer and single malt.

Agreed, quite good. I certainly don't care for their Chardonnay.
Supermarkets in Texas seemed to import some Italian whites, fairly bland but good to serve up to almost any guest, they don't take the coating off your teeth.
Have just bottled some Damson and some Apple wine. The XYL says they are too dry but her taste seems to be shifting to sweeter....no, less dry....wines.
I can't get the pear wine crystal clear so I might put it into green bottles and ensure it's drunk by Christmas.

In the smaller French supermarkets it's still a common sight for the old boys to come in and select a full bottle from a collection of odd screw-top bottles in some obscure corner. I'm all in favour of this and wish I'd tried some, it'll be what you'd call "unpretentious". The contents are obviously local and it represents a good deal for pensioners on a low income.

I've had great White Zin, and I've had lousy Chardonnay... Wine is meant to complement food.
I try to find local wines whenever possible, and prefer Ohio wines to some of the crap we've had in the Southeast... These hicks wouldn't know a good wine if it hit them upside the haid...

There are some very good wines made here in Ohio, some of the Amish wines really rock. I must admit though I'm not really much of a wine person.
I just finished another 6 gallons of Choke Cherry wine. This year, I beat the damned birds to the choke cherry crop and now they have been turned into something better than bird fod.

I'm having a Chateau Greysac Bordeaux tonight. Good but not as good as the Bordeaux I had at Pigalle (http://www.pigalleboston.com/) a month ago. I wish I wrote down what that Bordeaux was. I paid $90 for it. :(

I like a Sangiovese, Montepulciano, or a cheap Pinot Noir with pizza. I've taken to making French bread pizzas in my convection toaster oven. Quick, easy, and not bad tasting.
Now, world class pizza....that's a whole nother thread.
